Right this is on behalf of a mte but he's in S.Africa at the moment!

He had his N95 on ebay. The winner won the item and was sending an e-cheque through paypal. He then messaged my mate saying

"I HAVE HAD A MESSAGE FROM EBAY SAYING THAT PHONE AS BEEN CANCELED BUT I HAVE ALL READY SENT PAYMENT THROUGH PAYPAL SO COULD YOU PLEASE REFUND MY MONEY PLEASE BACK INTO MY PAYPAL ACCOUNT THIS IS WHAT EBAY SUGEST"

Now that does'nt even make sense! Anyway what next step should my mate take?

thanks for any imput

Call paypal, doesn't ring true.

mention you are unaware of ebay cancelling the auction and ask him to forward ebays message and mention that you havent received any funds as yet therefore you cannot refund

TBH, if your mate is away, then he shouldn't do anything until he gets back and can check his account.

Do you have your friends paypal details???
#5
I know all his passwords so I can check the accounts etc. He wont be back for nearly 2 weeks so rather then let it escalate I thought I would sort it now. With his permission of course

If it's an e-cheque then clicking the refund button only cancels the e-cheque not reimburses them any money from your paypal account.

Sounds more like he's changed his mind on buying it. Search his recent transactions and you'll probably see that he's won another cheaper.

But there is no risk involved to the PAYPAL account.

Exactly my thoughts. He has probably bid on a few phones. I've checked the feedback, nothing currently of interest (except a negative for not paying!). Is there a way I can check what he has purchased?

Yes, Here is a link to the quick way of doing it : http://www.goofbay.com/ebay_tools.html

Just look at users last 30 day buying history.

Thats strange, its not listing one of the items as my mates phone? Other than that he hasnt bid on another expensive item
[mod]#10
Also do a search by his user name on eBay and look at his sales won in the last 30 days.

If you want to PM me his username i can bring up the details and PM you the link.

Are you sure the listing hasn't actually been removed? Maybe your mate used pictures that he shouldn't have used?
banned#12
Do an advanced search, click on search by bidder, enter his username and away ya go

The photos he took himself some of the description was copy and pasted but if they did cancel it surely they would message him saying so

you can also check all stuff he has bid on even if not won items
#16
yeah checked that too thanks to syzables link. Nothing of interest. But he might have just changed his mind as someone mentioned before.

You can do that on the advanced search on ebay too, wasnt sure if you knew that so thought ide menton it, clicked on syzables link never knew about that, good site

The easiest way to tell if the auction has been pulled is to check whether it is still showing in his My Ebay page. If it's there then it hasn't.
#19
Yeah its there it hasnt been pulled this guy has just made an excuse because he changed his mind about the phone. He paid by an e-cheque so he could cancel it if he changed his mind and then if it comes to negative feedback being left he can prove he piad for the item as it says on ebay that he has sent payment - doesn't say if payment has been cancelled! Thats what I think anyway

I haven't read all of this yet but this sounds very much like a scam.
Did your mate get an email from Paypal informing of a pending e-cheque payment? I'm guessing no.

This used to be a common scam years ago, a scammer would buy something expensive from a newbie and say he had paid be e-cheque blah blah and the newbie would refund him, thus losing a lot of money.
What was the item number?

could be telling the truth though if you cant find it on goofbay
[mod]#22
He can't cancel an e-cheque, only the seller can and as Steve has said you only click refund on the actual payment showing from them in your PAYPAL account as it doesn't actually refund it just cancels it.
