My car's MOT is due this weekend and I was wondering if I should take it to a larger garage like Kwik Fit - never tried them before and dont want to get ripped off and hear the words: "Ohhhhh well your going to need a new flux capacitor sir"

Cheers

Stick with where you have been going, or if your friends and family recommend!

Personally I find smaller garages better, ask around and see if anyone knows a good trust worthy one

If your anywhere near Stoke, Titan are good

Ask people local for their experiences - neighbours, family, friends, work colleagues etc.

Good and bad garages get known very quickly if people share info. A good indicator should be whether they will be able to fit it in at the weekend - would be a bit late at the garage I use as they are good and therefore popular.

yep i agree as long as there doing there job properly, stick with who you know.
however i recently changed the garage we were using because when they did the mot they passed it, only to find out a couple of weeks later, our breaks were a death trap waiting to happen. not a happy bunny, put my little girl and many others in danger.

Take it to somewhere tried and tested!

I would avoid taking my car where there is an MOT Test entre and Mechanical Workshop combined. I was advised by a Trading Standards Friend due to complaints he regularly received by punters being duped into unnecessary and expensive repairs in these combined establishments!!!

I'd avoid a larger garage for an MOT personally. Support your local MOT garage :)

Ring around and see if there are any in the area that offer 'FREE RE-TEST' so if they find anything wrong, you will beable to get the work done somewhere else! Normally a free re-test will be valid for 14 days after the initial test.
There may be a place that offers the deal 'If it passes you pay' so if it fails you don't pay and you can again shop around for the best place to get the work done.
DON''T be forced to use the MOT garage to carry out the repairs, you'll get ripped off!

In future, it may be an idea to get the MOT done 2 or 3 weeks before it is due, I believe the MOT centre can issue a certificate for over a year!
Doing it this way, you won't be pressureed to get the work done on the spot!

Have MOT....anything highlighted in fail, take it somewhere else ask them for a quote...this is free....found a couple of big companies talking out their backside this way

I went to kwickfit a few years ago as the brakes didn't seem quite right on my battered old polo. They told me that I needed £200 worth of work done imediatley and that the car was dangerous to drive.

I thanked them for their time and quickly left as the car itself was barely worth £200.

I then took it to a mechanic friend of mine who diagnosed the problem as a leaky master cylinder on one of the rear drums - cost me less than £20 to put right.

Since then I advise everyone I know to stear well clear of kwickfit

Decision made...Local garage round the corner - mate goes there and he says he hasnt had any problems...If they cant book me in then it may have to be Kwik Fit

Remember sometimes when a garage finds a problem it could be genuine and save someones life !!
The best MOT station is not always the one that says all ok mate !!
The BEST is the "honest" one and you should be happy they have found the problems.
HONEST being the key here !!!

Mastiffs hit the nail on the head.

Any business who are trying to make a quick buck may fiddle you.

Its an honest MOT tester you need.

Its pretty rare for a tester to overlook items these days as the lengths the Ministry have gone to ensure dodgy MOTs are thing of the past.

Its all computerised and requires clocking in and clocking out for the tester per test, each test should last an average of minutes etc.

Any one found breaking the rules can face severe penalties.

Unfortunetly it doesn't stop the keen sales person in some mechanics.

Word of mouth is the best way to find a good local MOT tester.

It annoys me when people knock Kwik-fits not all are bad, there are rotten apples in every barrel!
