Mounting a camera on a remote control helicopter (This is not a call of duty thread!)

.

Little'un has asked for a remote control helicopter for xmas - and currently looking at something like this ebay item 330485985910 which is for outside use.

God knows how long it'll last before he breaks it (or if he gets to have a go before I do!)........ but I thought it would be nifty to add a video camera to it - to record its flight, see it chasing cats and browse in neighbours gardens. (More useful maybe in the summer for the last bit!)

So ........Since I know nothing about these remote helicopters anyway (and I know a few of you have bought them), and hopefully someone has done something similar and have an indication on costs and quality hints and tips....

Has anyone got a large chopper?

Best bet would probably be one of those little cameras people mount to helmets for mountain biking and such.
[mod]#2
You want something like the Mini DV video cameras. They are about £20 on eBuyer or around £7-8 on ebay from China.

Video of the helicopter you want if you want a sense of scale.

Are we sure this is for your boy?

"browse in neighbours gardens"

Statements like that suggest you don't like the neighbours and there up to no good, unless the next door neighbours fit?
#8
I thought i'd pop in here as it's NOT a COD thread,BUT it's worse, men talking about toys and GUVS chopper :|

In my experience a gust of wind throws those things wildly off course, might have to tinker a bit to get the weight balance sorted

Are you going to run a Misc comp for a ride on your chopper Guv?? :{

Indeed. It really needs to be flown in a Hanger!

Whoaaaa.......... no Homo bro! (Though it would create more interest than others who are trying to buy friendship on a shopping forum!)
#13
You have to run a comp to get friends on here,ah,that's where i'm going wrong !!

Wouldn't a camera break on one of these things in the hands of a child though.

I can just see the local papers headlines.

Local man's toy helicopter shot down above busy park, a local man (well known to HUKD) is helping police with their enquires into a terrorist plot to down the spy plane. It's a conspiracy claims the alleged shooter.
#15
I saw a news report a while back that some police forces were using a similar thing to check back gardens when searching for fugitives.
So obviously it can be done.

Do we need to guess the price your chopper was over 3 stores?

Saw a video about a year ago of the guy who made these doing a bit of a show off.
They look really good and the speed of it (Especially gaining altitude) is very impressive.

Pricey though i guess.

Wicked cool though.

Was just thinking.....
Most of us have been google street viewed already, next step close up flyovers or gardens or personal spaces.
There are probably some thinking it already.

Maybe next step is a series of jamming devices to prevent flights over certain areas???????????

Hi guv...I'm into RC helicopters and have a Falcon 3D 6 ch bought from heliguy.

how old is your son?
has he flown a RC heli before?

Looking at that ebay one, I don't think it wil have the power to lift a camera unless you upgrade the battery or and motor.

Helis crash....it's an unavoidable fact so buy one with readily available reasonably priced spares

have a look on the heliguy forums as they recommend the best current copters for starting out....counter rotational like your looking at are best for starting and learning to hover....but they become quite limited quickly.

Has he had the indoor type before....if not these are a good starter

ebay Item number: 270651955235

^^^^^^ Cheers for that I'll take a look.

He's only 10, but does have a sensible head on his shoulders. (Dunno where he got that from.)

This has all stemmed from seeing a couple of models flying in Costco last week. That said, i know i bought him one (probably not much cop) which in his bedroom wardrobe. (Wouldn't be surprised if it ended in a charity shop unopened.)

looked also at the small chinook indoor ones which seem easy to fly but obviously indoors only and careless.

That one your looking at does look quite nice...the giro system is good for beginners as it will just sit in the air without having to make adjustments, but to me that isn't what flying is about. he's also only flying it inside, have you found any vids of it outside flying. they don't specify what the motor RPM is, so It's hard to gauge what sort of power it produces and whether it would be enough to lift the camera weight and still fly and maneuver successfully.

OK ta. I did manage to look at the forum you mentioned. This one is 3.5 channels - that site says you need at least 4ch. Remembering he's just 10 and not looking for a pilots license, its probably fine. I do like the idea of the software training though. Obviously I need to look into it a bit before buying!

Nothing new, happens to any RC that goes out of range

LOL...I posted that link because it was the only one I could find of this helicopter flying outside....not to show how limited a range the transmitter had....but you do highlight a good point

OP i'd stick with the one you mentioned, the software training is fine if you want to learn without the cost of replacing bits every 2 mins but the one you've found is stable in the air and crash proof by the looks of it anyway

The guy banged the skids...when a heli crashes the blades hit the ground and the impact then damages the drive shaft and the gearing etc.

in the vid the he bent the blades in ½ and they stop going round if they touch something, how is the transmission going to get damaged?

LOL...he bent them back horisontal on the hinges when they were not spinning...what happens when they bend up or down on impact or when they hit a tree or goal post....I'm not dissing this copter...guv ask for advice from people that know about RC copters....I own loads of them of differant sizes and channels.

Guv the one you are looking at looks like a clone of the Syma 9053 ...But yours has the added functions on the added TX screen. Just check they are the same size and weight and if so you can buy your spares and upgrades as they wil be the same as the Syma which is a recongnised make who always have many outlets selling parts.

I fly genuine 3d copters, No serious flyer uses a giro....they are for learners like Guvs son....I'm not sure why you are trying to point score here, when all I'm trying to do is be subjective.

try doing this with a giro

My point is, it's toy designed to withstand being crashed into the ground by beginners without damage but you are confusing it with a non gyro heli that breaks into little pieces if you make the smallest mistake while trying to fly it, they are 2 totally different things that happen to look the same

Are you being serious.....My son has had this type of thing....they still crash and break especially outside. which is why Guv should work out which branded copter this is a clone of or buy a similar model from a known brand who sell the spares...why do you think they sell spares if they are not needed?
#39
Not sure if it is what you're looking for but I have posted one for £12 in Wilkinson in deals http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/air-hogs-jackal-remote-control-heli/793503

again....why do you think lyma and e-sky sell spares for these 3 ch copters with giros if they are indestructible and never crash....lol
