Hi all,
Yesterday my cat was camped out next to the freezer all day, I could see she was onto something so in the end I pulled the freezer out and a tiny grey mouse ran out! The cat caught it and ran around the house with it alive and basically tortured it before it got away. I spent all last night cleaning (found some droppings behind the freezer), then eventually found the mouse dead this morning behind the sofa. Now, our house is very old, there are loads of gaps in floor boards and skirting boards etc, we also have an unused cellar underneath. Is it likely there'll be more of them as I can't find any evidence of food raiding or nibbling.
Also does anyone know if this would be the reason why a previously litter trained mostly outdoor cat has in the last week or so decided to stay indoors and wee in the kitchen? I have been telling her off, but now I'm thinking maybe she was laying her scent to let the mouse now this was her territory???
Thanks in advance for any advice given.............

I have done, she got lots of praise and I let her have the run of the house overnight (she's normally confined to the kitchen and utility room).

It sounds like the mice may have just moved in (maybe due to the cold snap?), and your cat doesn't like it.
I doubt very much that there'll be just the one, unless the one your cat caught was out on reconnaissance and is based elsewhere. The 'territory' idea sounds plausable.

either the mice have just moved in or maybe your cat bought it in to play with. My cat did that once and funnily enough the same thing happened, he wouldn't move from in front of the freezer, my husband pulled it out and there was a tiny mouse

Reward your cat but put traps down. (safely so that cat is not injured)
Mice contaminate everywhre they go by leaving a trail of urine as they go.
That is why your cat peed.
It was trying to reclaim its territory.

Would love to but it'd cost a fortune. The access would need sorting (at the moment you have to leap down a hatch in the floor), and for some reason it is knee deep in rubble and crap, there's 4 rooms down there. Feel free to come and clear it for us, bring a wheel barrow, when it's done we'll invite you for a game of pool!

I very much doubt there's just 1 mouse too, think I'll wait a few days and look for evidence before I shell out any money, might put a tempting piece of chocolate near the freezer tonight and see if it's gone in the morning. I really should go and check out the cellar but I'm scared!

Cool where do you live? I'd love to have a nosy down there, wonder how many bodies are in the rubble?
#11
Lol, I'm in Wirral, a bit far for you to come for a bit of a nosy!

Maybe the bodies are keeping the mice in food! Mmmmm maybe I should feed them my hubby!

have you seen the film Ratatouille?
there's probably thousands!:w00t:

Well I've lived here 8 years and that the first time I've come across any evidence of one, I've been down to the cellar loads of times too and the thought of mice never occured to me, I'm only scared since yesterday (stupid really, I can't believe I'm scared, I used to keep pet rats!). I am braver than Mr Maido tho, he has only been down there once in 8 years and came back up shaking!

Well I left 5 little pieces of snickers bar out last night and kept the cat upstairs with me. As they're all still there and intact I am starting to assume our visitor was just a 1 off and maybe the cat ad brought him in.
Anyone have any other ideas of detecting if there are any more???

haha you're offering up food to attract more? :w00t:

where there is one there are another 10.

I really don't think there are any more, I only put the food out to see if it was taken and therefore determine if there was more than the one we found, I'll try it again tonight I think. I don't want to go and spend money on traps etc for no reason.
Was also wondering, if I put poison down in the cellar and one came upstairs to die and the cat had it, would it poison the cat?

Cats don't really eat mice just play with them then kill them accidentally, unless they are really hungry so just keep your cat well fed. Would have to eat 10 poisoned mice (approximately) to kill the cat.

Leave the snack inside not out, why would a mouse go out into the cold ?

No, I meant out on the floor in the kitchen, not outside lol
