my 3 year old daughter keeps begging me for a mp3 player as her older sister has one, but i am unsure if it is safe to buy one for her, mother in law says it fine and my mum says def no. so was just wondering if any parent has got one for there child around the same age group , and any idea which one to buy. thanks

She's 3 FFS! Just say no.

i disagree..she can have books on it and nursery rhymes...my older kids all had cassettes players, then cds, whats the difference? she will also learn how to use a computer to add her own stuff-the earlier we get our kids into technology the better!

I wan't commenting on the MP3 player, just the fact the OP was saying her daughter wants it so she must have it!!
#20
Jesus its an mp3 player lol!!

id let her have one, but not for nothing, as a reward for something or birthday present xx
#21
Dont spend a lot of money and try to wait till her birthday or at least say she can have one at Easter. That way she is learning she cant have what she wants when she wants it. At this age she does not appreciate the money involved so even if you only spend £10 make her wait a few weeks.

Yes it's ONLY an mp3 player, but I have to agree with comments, you're making a rod for your own back. Her sister has one so she MUST have one? You need to teach her life doesn't work like that. The fact she is leaving her Christmas presents by the fire for Santa to take back shows she's already ungrateful.
#28
mumbojumbo
She's 3 for goodness sake. You want to shove headphones on her and isolate her with meaningless pop songs and words she doesn't understand?? She's in her most receptive years - try some more engaging play activities. She can do the sulky teenager thing when she's older. :p

actually my darling i never mentioned anything about pop songs

no she not ungrateful she just wants to be the same as her sister, and how dare you judge my daughter you have never met her before. you are making her sound like a spoilt brat, she is 3 for christ sake she doesnt understand, i am only asking about a mp3 player for a gift for a bday so why push things to far

try this

http://www.woodentotsmk.co.uk/categories/14wtcp/cp05.JPG

that'll engage her little developing mind far better than a flippin mp3 player!!

if a kid needs a story, you read it to her.

I disagree. I would certainlly (and do) allow my children a cd player and agree with you that audiobooks are great for children (far, far better than plonking them in front of the TV). However at this age children need to be exploring the world around them and learning through play, in my opinion sticking headphones on a child isolates them from the world around them and is not to be encouraged.

As for the technology argument, I agree that it's a good idea to get children comfortable with modern technology, but she's only 3, there's plenty of time for that yet.

I'm not going to go into the buying what your 3 year old demands debate as I feel sorry for the OP after some of the reponses in this thread. I may disagree with the idea of buying the mp3 player, but there is no need to insult her parenting skills.

All the above is just my opinion, each to their own (exept the insulting parenting skills bit - I'm right about that, so knock it off people  )

I know she is only 3, which is why I said you would be making a rod for own back by letting her have her own way.

A child leaving toys by the fire for Santa to take back is an ungrateful act, whether you want to admit it or not, lol.

thats why i wanted other peoples views to see what they thought on the matter as my mum said no way to buy her one, or i wanted alternatives where she doesnt have to put earphones in her ears, and people assumed it was listening to music i never mentioned that, its for her storys from sunday school. people have painted a picture of me being a horrible parent putting my daughter in the corner and neglecting her where the truth is totally opposite from that.

Stories from Sunday School?

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Give her the brainless, mind-bending tunes instead of that carp anyday!

And thou doth protest too much...............

or maybe its just a little girl hoping the magic of santa will turn it into an mp3 player. :)

Posters are being too harsh here on the OP. She obviously loves her wee girl and wants to make her happy. She will probably get bored with it soon enough as kids that age get bored with most toys after a short while!

OP u r her mother - YOU decide if she should get one - not us, not your mother or your mother-in-law

my son has them as my other kids befoe did cds and cassetttes but theyre not used to isolate him-he likes books and he also has a portable dvd player-it tends to come out for holidays while on a plane etc...not every day.
