I dont think they will put you under GA but they will normally give you some kind of sedation if you are claustraphobic!

EDIT i had one on my knee and panicked like nobodys business!

I think the face guard is just to make sure your face and head dont move while the scan takes place. The MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Fine out more about it here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_resonance_imaging

It can get pretty clostraphobic and can appear to be quite frightening but the whole process is over in no time at all without any pain to you!

I had one on my head last week. I found it better than CAT scan. I even believe I fell asleep, it was 25 minutes but felt like 10.

ask for sedation... don't feel like an idiot for it. I'm a nurse and believe me there's no way I'd be getting an MRI without sedation as I am claustraphobic!! Let alone with having a mask on too!

I really struggled the twice I've had one on my back - would have completely freaked if my head was in one of those! You're not an idiot at all, if you're remotely claustrophobic it's a scary experience.

Least that bits over with:thumbsup:

I have had a MRI scan on my brain fo epilepsy and it was very frightening. I was given a button to press if I felt the urge to be taken out but kept telling myself that I would only have to have it done again if I pushed it :-( The noise was horrendous.......like sitting in a metal barrell whilst someone hit it with a baseball bat over and over again......It lasted for over an hour and to be honest I dont think I could go through it again.
Talk to someone in the know, and express your concerns to them, Im sure they have ways to help calm you beforehand.

I am also claustrophobic and have had to have 3 MRI scans now - 2 with the helmet. The one on my wrist (which you have to go completely in) was bad enough, but that cage thing is horrible.

I lay there desperate the press the button, but I knew they would have to start all over again so I managed to resist.

I did ok though, and got through it without sedation or anything.

You are definitely not alone, my cousin works in the xray department of a hospital and they all had to go through the MRI so that they know that the patient is going through, but she just couldnt do it, and a few others couldnt either. So even the people doing them know how bad they are, and are sympathetic.

I feel fortunate not to have had to go through what lots of you are describing here, but admire you all for your bravery in carrying on and not calling a halt to the proceedings.

I'm sure from the sounds of it, it is a natural reaction and they must have ways to help people by way of calming them down.

Hi

I am a radiographer and I operate an MRI scanner, the plastic mask is to make sure that your face is in the same place everytime when you have your radiotherapy, the MRI is to determine where the tumour is in relation to the mask and therefore accurate radiotherapy can be administered by wearing the mask during treatment.

Claustraphobia is not a nice thing and I did feel for you and can relate, I used to go pot holing until I got wedged and stuck which freaked me out somewhat, but try your best to remain calm and the most important thing is to just keep your eyes closed, we are only ever scared of what we can see, if you can't see the small space your going into then you would never know your in it! Not everywhere will give you sedation, it often depends on the Dr you are under and whether a CT scan will do instead. At the end of the day you need that MRI and it's not going to hurt you so try and stick with it.

Anyways all the best and hope it goes well!
