Ive got to have an MRI scan of my knee and im not to happy about being shoved in the tube thing, how long is this going to take? Will they just do the mri of the knee or the whole body?

Ive never had one before but know what they are like and would ideally like to get in and out as quickly as possible

Its nothing, depending on where you go chances are they will just stick half your body in, worst case you will have to go head first into the tunnel, its loud as hell and is a bit weird, just close your eyes.

You get earplugs/headphones and even music at some places.

Takes anything from 15mins to an hour, as its just your knee I would say about 20mins max.

ask them to see the piccys they are really interesting

I had one on my foot not long back and that's the only thing they put in there, they strap it up and leave you lieing there I was lied there for about half an hour,it's ok though nothing to worry about only thing is you have to strip down to your underwear but you will have a gown on and the noise is loud but they give you ear muffs.

i had my head and neck done ,my whole body was in the tunnel took 40 mins ,i guess 10-15 mins at max for your knee
really easy then give u head phones to listen to some music ,not that u can hear it as the machine is really noisy.

Hey,

I am probably the most claustraphobic person you will ever know about, I had a MRI done on my brain as I was suffering from neurological pains. To be honest the best thing you can do is close you eyes and think of something different, if you open your eyes when your in their you may feel abit panicky. The is an emergency button you can press to be in contact with the radiographer who will stop the procedure at anytime if you feel anxious.

Do tell them you are claustraphobic as they will keep more contact with you throughout the process.

Alternatively you can ask to take a sleeping tablet and be knocked out for the whole procedure.

so even if my whole body went in they would only focus on the knee?? and not scan the whole body?the reason i ask is it would obviously be quicker doing just the knee rather than the whole body!
do you think i could ask if they could just put my one leg in?

Lol they will do it however they need,They will probably strap both legs together to stop movement,It really is nothing unless they have to do your head for some reason,(sounds like putting your head in a spin dryer)

The chances are, for your knee they will only put you half way into the MRI machine, so your upper body and head should be out of the machine. Why do'nt you call up the MRI dept and ask them?? They are always helpful and deal with claustrophobic people on a daily basis.

i know they will do it however the need but what i am asking is if its only my knee will they just focus on that or will they scan the whole body?

if they just put my legs in that would be grand!!

They won't scan your body just your bottom half
#12
thats awesome iam actually considering phoning the department but i cannot find the number anywhere!!
#13
Phone up hospital, main switchboard and ask for the dept you require,or look on your letter which tells you your appointment,it will have a direct dial to dept or main # plus a extension # to ask for.

i finally found the number and phoned several times without any answer, i really hope i can just go in legs first with my top half outside.

Had one last year. Was fed into scanner feet first. If they do the same with you then most of your body will be outside. It is noisy but they had music playing in background when I had mine. It is easy. Just let then know about your fears and they will do what they can to help. Think positive and how lucky you are that they can do their investigations with a scan which is so quick and much less invasive than older options may have been.
You'll be fine.

This might be a better website for you.

When you phone the hospital, you need to ask for the radiology dept.

You made me laugh after very stressful day..........only wanting ONE leg to go in the tunnel. I know what you meant but I just had this image of you sat doing the splits with one leg in the MRI. They will ONLY scan your knee but it all takes time to set up.

Before MRI scanners, they had no choice other than to open the knee and take a look in. MRI might not be pleasant but it is great progress. Nobody looks forward to most health tests and it is normal to feel worried. Hope the site helps

Had both knees done in Feb, took around 50 minutes. Only your knees will be in the scanner and they gave me headphones to listen to music. Most places let you take in your own CD, mine was a cancellation so didn't have time to get one sorted.

So 25 minutes for you and you just wear normal clothes.

thanks very much!

sweetie, tell them when you get there you really dont want to have to go head first into it if you can possibly avoid it, I'm sure they will accept your wishes if possible to do so.

Let us know how it goes

And don't worry, you'll be fine sweetie x x

I have had one on my head and one of my wrist. Head was much worse because I had a cage thing on my head, but had to go in totally when I had my wrist done, and I was hoping to just stick my arm in!!!

I am VERY claustraphobic and I got through it without anything to calm my nerves. If you do have to go in to it then just keep your eyes shut the whole time, it is a lot easier.

Try not to press the button, if they bring you out they will have to start again.

well it seems as though i will be ok and just be able to stick the old leg in first!
