A little something for you xbox gamers.

Machines found to be incompatible with new disc format will be swapped

Users who find that their Xbox 360 consoles are not compatible with the upcoming new disc format for the platform will receive a free replacement.

Microsoft has confirmed this morning's rumours, saying that in most instances it can sniff out any offending hardware and proactively contact the owners.

"Following a recent update to our system software, we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs," a statement reads.

"This issue manifests itself a as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console.

"Any Xbox 360 owners receiving this error are encouraged to contact us at http://www.xbox.com/support/contact so we can verify if the console has been impacted."

What're they doing? Is this some anti-piracy measure they're bringing in?

Sort of... allows an extra gig of space on a disk apparently, which in turn I think almost by accident has made piracy slightly more tricky.

Anyone know which consoles are effected? Just the very first ones? what about arcades?

Yes and no. They are ditching the current sectors on disc that deal with security as app* they have accepted the consoles current security system emplacement has been breached and are happy to gain the used data space for game content in sacrifice for security (or to introduce e new security tech/measure)

One Kotaku reader then received a surprise email from Microsoft stating that they had detected over Xbox Live that his machine (and 60GB Pro from 2009) would not work with the new discs.

Might be a good way to get yourself a new 360 on the cheap!

As reported this morning, one Xbox 60GB Pro owner has already been offered a free 250GB S model.

The firmware update the enables compatiblity with the new formats will be rolled out from tomorrow.

I've got loads that I hope will suffer as long as I get brand new machine . I got a brand new 60gig never opened I might open it in the hope IT it cabbages the reading capability, my red elite might as well change that for a slim 250Gb as well...

So basically all these xbox people who slated PSN for being down, may now be unable to play some of the latest games unless they swap the 360's over?

Microsoft have only just got round to it after how many year?
#9
The affected consoles are surely the ones with dicky drives where the laser is unable to read the innermost layer of disc effectively, just a guess

PSN and sony **** up royally.

At least with MS when RROD happened they fessed up and people got consoles repaired within 3 years (and it was a very easy process for collection etc start to finish) for free extra one month of live free with console returned.

Sony was much more long winded you either had to pay 130ish quid or go down the route of contacting the retailer you bought it from.

Plus their online service went down for a month and peoples details were compromised. Good job!

Is there anyway I can damage my xbox on the sly to get a new console? ;)

I wouldn't mind knowing the answer to this as well, even if i just make out my xbox isn't reading the discs ;)
#14
I would assume that it's a certain drive or motherboard which is incompatible with the new update. The person reported to have received an offer of a replacement had a 2009 console, which would mean a LiteOn drive at a guess?

Microsoft however state its only a "small" number of people who'll be affected, so maybe its more than just having one particular drive.. as millions of people must have LiteOn drives..

If the problem is that some drives (especially hitachi's) have difficulty reading the disc close to the centre, where before this was not an issue, you could simulate this by putting something on the disc to force a read error when the xbox accesses this area
#16
Seems Microsoft can tell if you'll be affected or not over XBL, so people hoping to fake it in order to get a free upgrade might be out of luck.

I guess they can remotely detect the hardware you have and the firmware version. And they know which hardware is affected..
#17
MS already know which consoles will be affected and have started emailing people.

I assume that when you go on live something in the information that goes back to them identifies your drive type meaning that they know who will be affected before it happens. I don't think this is something that can be simulated as they have stated it is a specific disc read error

I've got a 60GB model (upgraded to a 120GB) from 09, here's hoping I get a new 250 Slim ;)

It's about time MS gave people something for for free!

It's never had RROD though, in the two & half years I've had it, so can't complain really!

:D

Good work from MS. They get (and deserve) a lot of stick but they've been ok with their console arm.

The 1.19 mhz is hardly going to heat up the 2600 though

Is that not theft ? -
#24
MS would only be offering a free upgrade following the stats on effected consoles to ensure it's cost effect to do.

The chances of getting a new one would be very slim I would of thought.

I received an xbox email today but I just deleted off my BB...will double check it when I get home in case it wasnt just a generic XBL email and I'm owed a console lol

60gb console, never opened. Dont go online with it yet, You could make more money if it's jtagable.
#29
I recieved a generic newsletter but last time I was on XBL was around Christmas,
#30
I was tempted to jtag it well pay someone else to do it as I like the idea of installing and playing my games from a 1tb 1.5tb HDD or higher with a nice interface

I havent heard about that usb adaptor in weeks that lets you use any hard drive via usb.

In fact thinking about it I wonder if this is the reason for the update.
#32
well if it's definately jtagable and you are considering selling it, i know someone that may be interested in buying

true, but i think there's a vast difference between being unable to play online for 24 days, and never being able to play a disc based game ever again.

Yes, after 18 months and a $1 Billion dollar lawsuit.
Neither manufacturer has been angelic this gen, tbh.

At least its not as bad as Sony last gen and the huge rate or DRE's that they refused to fix out of warranty(or even in warranty if it happened more than once or twice)

Last gen PS2 bulky versions had a relatively high rate of disc read errors, especially the launch consoles, it was often a simple fix but awkward and time consuming and due to the nature of the parts it was so easy to break something taking console apart.

Sony wouldnt fix them for free out of warranty.

Oh yeah, only had experience with that as the PS3 was released so just bought a PS2 slim until I could afford a PS3. Maybe if they'd have been threatened with a lawsuit they'd have caved in. Not 100% sure but I still don't think the failure rates of the PS2 were anywhere near the 360's (but I could be wrong)

I dont have the figures but I know it was a big thing and all over the gaming sites like Gamefaqs a the time and years later.

I had about 5 faulty PS2s from Sony in a 3 month span as they kept dying(2 were actually faulty on arrival as they were refurbs) one had a broken dualshock feedback funcion(console not pad) one read games slowly for some reason(when you put a disc in it took 10 minutes to recognise it then it worked fine)

I still have my 8 year old Gamecube here still working! and my 13 year old Saturn that works!
banned#40
Failure rates should be irrelevant. If a console has 1% or 50% the manufacturer should be responsible for the repair or replacement for a minimum period. I think 3 years sounds reasonable.
