"APOLOGIES!
TEMPORARY SUSPENSION DUE TO MAJOR OVER-DEMAND

All the functions have been taken off line temporarily to keep it working.
"

Just wait a while............
#2
is it down because of the tonight with trevor macdonald thing that was on before?
#3
Nah been down a while. I have found it has been really very slow recently, and glad it has broken, because now they will get servers that can cope (like those here)

Crumbs - won't go out shopping today then if all the nasty sniping and miserable MSE'ers are going to be out and about.
Hopefully their site will be up soon and all the Victor Meldrews can then get back to normal.

Apparently MSE has been attacked by hackers

For all that are wondering what happened to MSE, Martin has been on Facebook and posted that "HACKERS" have got on to the site.

Sadly we now have confirmation it is a deliberate and malicious attack on the site.

And now Littlewoods staff have accomplished their first goal they are now working overtime on the HUKD servers. :giggle:

Apparently they'll be rewarded with 10 x £25 off vouchers each. :w00t:

There seems to be a bit of sniping going on here too? I think MSE is a very informative site, that has lots of friendly useful info not just about shopping. Its bl00dy annoying that hackers think its big and clever to attack it. :(

Yeah, it's sad really.

Also, we should all remember that MSE isn't in any way "in competition" with HUKD, they do more money advice and we do more shopping... it's all fair making jokes about MSE, but just remember that their site also does a sterling job.

how do they hack it? could this site be hacked :-(

They are using a DDOS attack.

[admin]#18
Often people think they are having a DDOS when they aren't.... Hopefully they will be able to back up that statement when they come back online. Not that it really matters but it's a bit sensationalist if really it's just bad server config :)

As said it's a good resource site for financial advice/saving. Not sure why anyone would want to ddos it unless they got banned hehe

Wiki Denial of Service Attack

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denial-of-service_attack

And yes it could happen on HUKD
[admin]#20

DDOS isn't a hack - it's just pointing a massive amount of requests at the site until it folds and can't get back up.

So yes it can happen to absolutely any site. There's ways to protect against this but nothing is foolproof.

Of course on HUKD we go down with our own traffic spikes so not sure we'd be able to tell the difference :p

ive been getting a lot of ddos attacks lately but luckily for me my router blocks them

anyway i hope it comes back soon

I'm a regular there as well.
Why did it have to go down at the weekend(Ooer)?

I like this site, but MSE has so much more to keep you occupied.
I have actually got the radio on on my freeview box for the 1st time.

Why "hehe"? I'm sure we wouldn't be heheing if you banned someone and they retaliated in this way.
I think you need to sit on the naughty step while you consider your response.

hehe because it was a joke and not a serious comment Christmasshopper. As I said I am not sure why anyone would want to ddos it.

It's back up, but is acting a little flaky, and the forums are still offline.

The MSE site was recently updated re servers etc, so I don't think it's that but I'm not surprised by this latest 'attack' and I'd be very surprised if there hadn't been previous ones.

Martin L has lately become a bit of a 'Robin Hood', hitting big financial institutions where they don't like it - in the pocket. Many of his revelations are costing big banks, etc, millions if not billions of £'s.

Personally, I think he's actually putting himself at risk (something I intend to mention to him - et al - when the sites back up). These big corporations don't play fair when somebody's removing the lining from their pockets, and I think if this is a DDoS attack, then it's been a serious warning to him. If he keeps it up....I don't think there is a limit to what they'd consider.

Hmmm, a touch over-dramatic methinks.

Why don't they attack the Littlewoods site, where the target is much more deserving?
#35
DDoS attacks are pretty commonplace, any self respecting geek knows how to do one - it only takes one disgruntled member to do it, doesn't require a big conspiracy from the big boys lol

Thats assuming the hackers have done so for fun and not other motives!

Are there any disgruntled businesses that would rather the site didnt exist?

Id imagine their own people are on the case to see if they can descover from where the DOS attack came from. Fingers crossed!!!!

I don't know, if somebody was taking millions out of YOUR pocket, what would you do to stop them or put them off???

Bear in mind the UK market is not just UK any more - there's eastern europe and asia in there now. The EU guys regularly knock off journalists sniffing too close to stories. Seriously - they murder them. And that's before they've cost them millions. Asia is a whole lot worse.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but MSE must be causing headaches for many institutions, and the PPI thing is just the latest.

Imagine whats going to happen when he gets onto the mobile phone contract thingy (I understand that a 'group' - CAB, TS, etc - may test the mobile phone contract issue. That's where a contract is given over the phone but not signed for. They've just won one with catalogues - where if goods were bought from a company - on an unsigned contract - the 'contract' is null and void. Tried and tested in court. My OH worked on THAT one.) How many people have UNSIGNED mobile phone contracts?????

Not yet dramatic enough IMO.

once a ddos attack happens its very easy to avoid it the next time! I dont know why its still down unless the ddos attack has caused some sort of data corruption but then again the site would be backedup!

Have you been taking deep breaths anywhere in the vicinity of a glue factory recently?

Do you actually know what a DDOS attack is?

Give me half an hour and I could DDOS this site...........this isn't mafia banks we're talking about, it's smackhead punk teenagers with too much time on their hands.

Please get a grip.

Next you'll be claiming there really is a terrorist threat to the UK or that global warming is a reality..........
