By staying silent these last few days and out of the media eye, Mugabe has been able to manipulate the media once again and have his preferred images broadcast on BBC and other major media organisations tonight. We even get to hear him suggest the opposition are using underhand means to try and 'steal' the election.

If you want a lesson on how to grab success from the jaws of defeat, you could do far worse than watching this man closely over the next days/weeks. But can he actually pull it off? I know he's a wily operator and has done this kind of thing before, but is it really possible that he might continue to hold power in Zimbabwe?

Interested to know your thoughts.

Let's hope that snake in the grass doesn't manage it, for the sake of all those poor people who have suffered for endless years under his power.
#3
Yeah lets hope he doesnt pull another fast one

Yeah, he's really messed up the lives of millions of people, and put his country in economic turmoil. He deserves to be killed in the worst way possible.

Hmm... well I agree with some of your thoughts about his actions, but that doesn't condone what you suggest. In fact, nothing does! (I hope you weren't serious).

If he can actually tie his own shoes up then he's smarter than I thought he was........

Not even Mugabe deserves death by Mau Mau... :p

What's media manipulation got to do with anything?

The armed forces are the reason he is still around.

Its the old joke about people walking in the jungle..

An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman are trekking through the rainforest when they are suddenly surrounded by a band of pygmies. Spears are pointed at the three Europeans. A pigmy in a headdress at least as tall as the munchkin wearing it steps forward.

"You have trespassed!" says the oompa-loompa. "You must be punished. But we are a merciful tribe and we offer you the choice: death or mau-mau."

The three lost men talk amongst themselves. What is this mau-mau?

Eventually the Englishman steps forward. "I say, Big Chief Little Pants. In my experience, anything is better than death so I choose...mau-mau!"

The chief says "Agh, mau-mau!" The tribesmen then bring in a tray of fruit. Two warriors grab the posh Englishman, rip off his trousers and bend him over. The chief takes some strawberries from the tray and shoves them up his...

The Englishman wails and weeps but eventually the torture stops. At that point the chief says "You have been mau-maued. Let that be a lesson to you. You may go." With that Johhny Englander waddles off into the rainforest nursing a painful behind.

The Chief turns to the Scotsman and says, "You next! Death or mau-mau?"

The Scotsman says "Och aye, I don't like the look of mau-mau, but I don't want death. Give me mau-mau."

The chief says "Agh, mau-mau!" He is stripped and bent over. The chief takes some apples from the tray and inserts them as before. The Scotsman screams, it is agony. In the end, though, even agony passes. He is freed and crawls into the rainforest, unable to walk.

The Irishman is left all alone. Up comes the chief. "Death or mau-mau?"

The Irishman is not stupid - he peers round the headdress of the chief and sees that the tray is empty except for three pineapples. "Oi cannot bear to be ravaged by three pineapples" he says in a Dublin brogue. "I choose death!"

The chief grins and says "Agh, death by mau-mau!"

Kirsty is talking about him now on Newsnight ... Johm Simpson is saying the riot police have arrested severl members of a US funded organiation who have been helping the opposition keep track of votes. The idea may be that Mugabe is trying to make a claim that the opposition are funded by CIA (foreign meddlers, etc) and hence have been corrupting the results .... See what I mean about needing both...?

The man knows exactly what buttons to press with his supporters and honestly doesn't care what anyone outside the country thinks of him which is a dangerous combination. He will never let go of power as long as he thinks he can keep hold of it, unfortunately he's taking the whole country and its destitute population with him.
