Music lovers - your set-list suggestions please...

I sing in a covers band in Essex; and we also have a girlie singer, which lets us cover a massive repertoire. We often say she needs more songs suitable for parties - but we find it hard to think of any for a girl singer, that is still rock...

Any suggestions, gang?

We do all shades of rock...Blondie's a good call - we started messing around with One Way Or Another...perhaps we should ressurect that. China In Your Hands is a bit of a slowy for a party set...

We tried this, and whilst I thought we covered it well, the others didn't think so.

...keep 'em comin' though, please!

Lindsey Buckingham sung that - I thought OP wanted girl singing songs?

the cranberries version is sung by a girl and it works very well

You're right - and I was singing it...s'probably why I thought it sounded good! Lol! It's full of harmonies though, so keeps both me and our ladysinger busy...

Alanis Morrisette? Melissa Etheridge?

I don't want to expose my Manics fetish too much here, but girly voice and rock n roll? That's half of their career.

I'm sure Heart have a few suitable tracks in their discography, such as Barracuda :)

I have to say, most anything can be sung by a girl or a boy, and come off entirely differently. I heard a girl lead singer do Staind's I'm on the Outside, and it ROCKED! (But it was completely different... but the same... ifkwim)

Ha...yeah...IKWYM. We do Sweet Child O' Mine and she sings it - and on a couple of occasions, punters have pulled me aside and said "you should sing this - it's a boy song", so sometimes that tack doesn't pay off!

As for previous suggestions:

Alanis - yeah, we do You Oughta Know already...I reckon we should also do 'All I Really Want' though.

Manics - yep, I love 'em , but the Richey-era stuff is a bit niche. You Love Us, at a push, I reckon - which I've angled for before (the others reckon it's not well known enough). Kevin Carter might work with a girls voice though, eh?

Melissa Etheridge - she sang 'Bitch', right? Yep, that's down on my list...

Bring Me To Life we already do as a duet - always makes people stop and listen, not many covers bands do that.

Heart - will raid Spotify for which of their songs might work.

Loving this - it's very helpful, please keep them coming....

Apologies JTT - was just rounding up the suggestions made since my last post. I can't get to YouTube whilst I'm here at work, so didn't see what vid you'd posted. Yep, Favourite Game now on t'list. Me and ladysinger have been compaigning for this for a while...need to convince the others - your votes may sway them!

How about
Evanescence
Cardigans
Cranberries
Garbage
Siouxsie and the Banshees
Katy Perry (sp)
Paramore
Texas

you'd have to round it off with 99 red balloons.

We do Bring Me To Life and I Kissed A Girl, so that's kinda the top and bottom two covered in terms of what's well know.

Which Garbage and Siouxsie songs would you go for, Greg?

You're getting Melissa Eitheridge mixed up with Meredith Brooks. Melissa is an American rock artist, and is one of my faves. I've got all her stuff. I can zip some ripped tracks and email them if you like.

I suppose I should say no for legality/morality reasons, but thank you for the offer! Which songs do yu think are recognisable and do-able? I'll check 'em out on Spotify...

The ultimate would be a Kate Bush song 'rocked up' a little.

Can you 'rock up' This Woman's Work?
#23
OK - you didn't say they had to be recognisable!!! It's not like they're on the radio all the time, but maybe doing one or two that people haven't heard before would be a good thing, speshly if they are good tracks, and well sung.

Try listening to: I'm the only one, and Yes I am, and Breakdown for a taster. I have all the albums, and it's the only stuff I can listen to all the way though without zipping any tracks!
#24
Roxette: The Look
Belinda Carlisle: Leave a Light On

....yes, I like the 80's

I'll have to see if I can find some more contemporary suggestions in my collection.
There are some great tracks on the first couple of Garbage albums, or even Hole's third album 'Celebrity Skin'.

Well, by saying they were for party sets, I'd hope I'd inferred that they needed to be catchy - and therefore perhaps recognisable...??? Was I being too veiled? Lol...

The 80s is cool - I'm happy to take a step back in time. I've been angling for us to do a rocked up version of Wouldn't It Be Good for aaaaaages...and Stand and Deliver!

You said music lovers, how can you be a music lover if you only listen to what's in the charts? :whistling:

I recommend Straylight Run btw, they have a great female vocalist as well.

Depends on the party. If everyone's too drunk to care, stick a cd on and go home. Otherwise, it they're there to listen to some good music... sing some good music that they've not heard before!!! Gets the people back.

I didn't say chart music only. If you were at a party, and a band played a song you didn't know, unless it's insanely catchy, you wouldn't get up and dance would ya? I want people to be moved to their feet - which often means you need something recognisable and anthemic!

hehe. I can't remember the last time I heard the charts. I saw Lady Gaga on telly the other day and was stunned, she's proper uuuuugggggllllllyyyyy!!! I thought she'd be totally different having just heard her on the radio once or twice. I do think they should bring back TOTP though, I'm totally out of sync with 'today's' music.

Well I first heard Straylight run at Oxford Zodiac I bought their album that night I loved how catchy their music was.

Irritatingly, it pays to be populist...if I had my way, our little band would be doing ALL sorts! Take a song like Connection by Elastica though - if we pay it in a pub it goes down well...at a wedding or function it tends to lose people because it ain't well-known and danceable. Trust me, I'd be verrrry happy having all the cool open-minded 20-somethings on their own on the dancefloor, but we get paid to have grandad up dancing as well...which means being thoroughly predictable at times...

Ha - you'd be surprised - there's always a few that go down well at any party...Sex On Fire...Long Train Running, I Feel Good, Love Shack, Valerie...500 Miles...always get a good response. At one wedding last year, the groom had bought 5 sacks ful of inflatable guitars, so everyone could air-guitar along to Sweet Child! That was class!

I want to see your band perform The Poet and the Pendulum by Nightwish :p
(full 14min version, no shortcuts).

I've always liked this one.

Do you ever play in Harlow?

No - we're more South West Essex...although we've talked about coming up to Harlow and dropping CDs off - I'm told there's a decent music scene up there. We're just trying to sort out which venues are worth a drop and which aren't...
#39
We have
The Square
The Purple Emperor and
The Shark that I know of.

The Square is a younger persons club that puts on a lot of bands. ( Not a youth club )
The other two are pubs with The Purple Emperor probably being the more popular.
It's also quite near me so let me know if you are visiting.
