What kind of car is it?

Sounds like your ignition barrel has gone

At least you and the kids are ok, I bet it could of been a lot worst. Hope it gets fixed ok.

How would you make such a random guess like that?

If steering lock has come on and power cut out it's very likely to be the barrel at fault.

It could of coarse be something totally different.

thanks for all your kind thoughts. things could have been worse and we were lucky. Car is all fixed now and I have just taken it out on my own and feel confident again, as soon as I pulled off it felt better to drive than before! so I'm not worried it'll happen again, well not as worried lol.

thanks again everyone x x

Well my first thought is, the engine died (for whatever reason) and took the power steering with it. You need to be built like a brick ****house to steer a car under those conditions at low speed

Kirsty, now it's fixed, what was actually wrong?

Yeah, Kirsty what caused it? Glad no harm came, it must have been horrible for you

apparently there was a hole in a pipe and 2 others were perished and the battery wasn't holding its charge :w00t::w00t:..... not sure which out of those faults caused what happened yesterday but its all fixed now. its not an old banger and it is looked after. apparently the weather we've been having could have effected the battery but I have no clue about engines! :-D just glad its fixed! xx
