My dads going through an audio conversion! help

basically my dad used to be all clued up with his amp and stand up speakers along side his exhaustive CD collection... but he has suddenly found himself way behind the times, he loves spotify and is more than willing to pay for it and that is the way he wants to progress while not neglecting his old CD collection

what is the best way for him covert to this predominantly digital medium?

hes currently considering a laptop with a teufel concept speaker and amp set up, but is this his best bet? or should he be looking down the squeezebox route (whatever the hell they do).. got a flexible budget of £800 but what is his best bet?

any advice greatly appreciated

Not sure what you are asking here.

Doesn't he get a choice of ripping his cd if he puts one in the drive, whether it be windows media player or winamp or iTunes or whatever.
He can then rip it and play it whenever he wants.
Or have I missed something.

I will probably be doing this to my CD collection over the winter months.
Then I have vinyl to think about.

hmm its not so much about preserving his current collection as he is happy to play them through a CD player or whatever system he opts for through a laptop and this speaker system, its more about how to continue and as i say he's a real fan of spotify and wants to go that way and is willing to pay, so he can create his own playlists and set it all up online, he really just wants to know whats the best way to have these facilities for a soundsystem in his living room?

he wants a decent laptop so from eveything ive come across soo far his best bet for playing his music and listening to stuff from spotify seems to be to buy a decent one and a decent teufel speaker system to go with it that can be set up with a small amp,

im just wondering if there are any other options for moving into digital music, like theres the squeeze box and stuff but i dont even have a clue what the thing does (audio is definately not my forte)

When ripping a CD, I use Nero to connect online to get the CD details and then rip to WAV. I then use anything with the Lame encoder for conversion to MP3. Hey, it's old school, but I still hear new CDs ripped using media player or others and it sounds pretty poor even at a decent bit-rate.

if he's a real audiophile then he will need a good quality DAC

whats a DAC? i think he probably recons he is a bit more than he is, he definately used to be more into though and wants to get back there

atm i think its looking like a teufel speaker set up with amp plugged through USB into a laptop,

he's also keeps mentioning a squeezebox to me but does anybody know whether you could set up a squeezebox reciever to something liek a teufel set up? cheers for the replies guys :D

Sonos system to play the music.

Rip Lossless audio from the CD to his Laptop/PC to store the collection.

He'll need a bit of hard drive space though.

digital analog converter, would the amp within a teufel system not do that job well enough? sonos looks nice but a bit out the price range id say
