Hi, basically my son was angry at me so when i left the room he saw me using the hd earlier, so to get back at me he threw it out of the window along with my nokia n95.
Here's a pic of what the hd looks like now, (look below)

I dangerously connected it to the computer, it can see that it has been filled up with 400gb, but it can't actually find the files or copy them, it's just blank when you open it up.
What can i do to get all my data back it's very important, what are my options?

It's a 500gb Buffalo External HD, with a Western Digital hard drive inside it and i think it was a NTFS.

lol, i was very disappointed with him and he's not a aggressive kid at all, i don't know what came over him.

To put him over your knee, don't let him have any treats at all for a month and send him to his room with no tea the little sh1t!!
#5
If it was me I would take every single thing out of his room and only leave his bed.

In the other case I dunno if theres anything you can do with it, I know that when I broke my HD in my laptop it was sent back to me so that I could take it to pc world so that they could take my data off for me if I wanted it.

I think that can be rescued; you may have to completely dismantle and connect the drive into a new enclosure....google it
#7
if above fails
forget it m8, the head will have scratched all over the platter surface, maybe get a bit back through a specialist but will cost hundreds for them just to "try"

HAHAHAHA!

Does he have anything that can be confiscated? Xbox, PS3, phone....get them confiscated.

As for the HDD, not sure anything can be done, unless the actual disc inside is pretty secure?

NO! Buy a new enclosure and connect it to that- the drive is a standard internal 3.5" ... if you know anything about the inside of a computer just put it into a tower!

he's 8 and i said that he can't go on holiday with his best friends family for 3 weeks, cause we already have plans for the summer and i dont trust giving him away to anyone but family, especially for 3 weeks.

Don't take it to PC World. They're useless at best, potentially extremely damaging at worst. Far too expensive in whichever case.

What you need to do is to remove the harddrive from the enclosure and the circuitry of the enclosure so you get a bare drive like this, then plug that in to your desktop PC. You might need an extra SATA data cable to run the drive alongside your existing harddrive, but if you haven't got one, just take the cables that plug into your current drive and use them. Turn the system on. Does it recognise the drive? Does it make any bad sounding noises? Let us know what happens from there, and if you've got a second SATA cable for attaching both drives at the same time. You might well have no trouble at all.

I don't have a tower pc, only a imac, with vista and leopard installed on it.
I think i should go with the enclosure method, do you guys have any advise on which one i have to get and how to set it up?
#18
If when you connect it, it sees that the space is used but no files appear, then you may be able to recover them with PhotoRec

it's completely read-only so won't try writing anything to the disk. It ignores the partition data, and focusses on files itself therefore as long as the info's there, it should find it for you.

There are two types of hard drives. IDE and SATA

See pic http://archive.64bits.se/guider/pcbyggarskola/sata.jpg

The top is SATA and the bottom is IDE. You need to buy the relevant enclosure

There's quite a few on Amazon, and other places have them. As long as you pick the right connection, IDE or SATA, then any enclosure will do, cheap ones are pretty much the same as the expensive ones.

+1

Just put it in your PC as a slave and if it's not totally fried you can remove the data yourself.

Wow 8... how come he not at school or you in Scotland and holidays have started?

Very easy - it's either SATA or IDE - you can tell from the connections on the drive (or googling the model number)

IDE:

SATA:

then something like this : http://www.***********/product/136214

It looks like a SATA drive due to the lack of an IDE cable connected in the picture.

Ps. Sell the child on eBay. Grr.
