My Gas has stopped working!

My Gas has suddenly stopped working, nothing shows on the gas meter, oh great.

So now I have no hot water, no heating and no cooker. Fantastic

I have to wait til Monday to arrange a repair as it's not a 'major' emergency.

Can you call around and see if anyone has any portable radiators for you to borrow?

Ours packed in a few winters back - it was COLD.

Wrap up warm - lots of layers or try and get aroudn someone elses house!

Good luck
#3
Oh no, I wouldnt want to be without heat or a cooker in this cold.

Do you have friends/family you could go visit for sunday dinner and a few hours of warmth?
#4
Phone up and say that you have a child under 2 and that you really need heat
#5
ring them back and say your neighbour came in and can smell gas

they will be around like a flash

and or the 2 year old kid thing and when they arrive say it got so cold the child has gone to a relatives
#6
Should I be calling the Gas Emergency Service (Can you smell gas? blah blah) I thought it was the Landlord (Can't use the child excuse as it's a bedsit!) or the gas supplier, it seems to be just the meter that's not working.
#7
Is your gas meter inside the house or out, check that the stopcock next to the meter hasn't been turned off.
#8
"i can smell gas" will get them there in a flash, but they will just cap the pipes. Thats what they did for me (i could smell gas though) then I had to get the council in to provide a hotplate and electric heaters. I guess if you're not council its up to you to sort it. pain in the a**e.

Have any friends or neighbors got an electric heater? last resort = first thing in morning, head to argos and buy a heater, return it once your gas is back on.
#9
I've got an electric heater it's just damn expensive to keep that beast breathing.
#10
Have you annoyed the russians? Maybe they have cut you off?
#11
Check that the stopcock hasn't been turned off, could be as simple as that.
#12
Checked but the stopcock but it's on, I think it's the meter thats ******ed. It's one of those PAYG ones with a top-up card, at first I thought I ran out of credit, which I thought was weird 'cus I thought I had plenty left. You usually press a button to see how much you got left, but nothing is showing. It's like it's off but there's no switch for it.
#13
mine did that they said it had turned itself off threw a vibration (sum1 must gaveslammed the door) they are meant to come out within 12 hours! akll trhey did was put in aqcard 2 reset the meter

fone ur supplier up,
sum1 tlod me wen mine went off if u say u have asthma they are meant 2 cum quicka, keep pestering them they'l turn up

Meters are the property of your gas supplier/national grid and cannot be touched by your landlord (nor is it their responsibility). NG will not carry out any work unless getting a work order from your supplier, so there's your first call. I agree with the other poster - it sounds like a dead battery.

Welcome to HUKD. :)

So they come around to the OP instead of someone is really in need of their gas, or needs theirs shutting off because of a genuine leak. Nice one.

^Saw that number but it says electricity? Will call them anyway.
#24
Yeah we had this, we put our credit in and it didnt show up, next minute the meter went blank, we rang up and was told within approx 4hrs, they come out virtually within half an hour, they replaced battery and it still didnt work so they had to change the meter and added a load of credit to it so it would last us until the new card come through the post.

We rang our Gas supplier.
#25
Let us know what they say.

Only other number I can see is

National Gas Emergency*
0800 111 999†

*This number is run by National Grid as the National Gas Emergency Service
#26
If EDF is your gas supplier they should handle it?
#27
Damn, had to call four different numbers! First the EDF one above but they stopped me and said call gas emergency above, they said call supplier and gave different number, called that and got answerphone and got emergency number, so finally called that waited ages told them what happened got put on hold then said I have to wait til 8am tomorrow morning! Should be here within 6hrs after that. Good thing I got a hot water bottle.
#28
good job it wasn't your electric meter eh!
you'd not have been able to post for advice

NOT a very helpful or kind comment. :x

This is no weather for anyone to be without heating or the means to cook warm drinks / food.

The OP's needs are as valid as anyone else's and they have every right to call out someone to help, as soon as possible.
#30
Typical they had you phoning round! If you dont see anyone within the six hours they stated get back on the phone to them and make a fuss, sometimes you have to assert pester power!

Glad someones coming out to you :)

It's meant to be a little warmer tomorrow too! :-D

At least I can have a nice warm bath tomorow.
