OK I know very little about Itunes.
I have the latest version and I have downloaded all these Christmas freebies.
I can't see any of the videos though.
All I get is the sound and a green and pupleish/pink screen.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

my sons itunes went all wonky when he put it on the screen was like coloured stripes running through it but havent a clue whats wrong with it either?
#3
forgot to add:
is your i-tunes and quicktime the latest?
#4
Yep i-tunes is the latest.
I'm trying to play these things through i-tunes that I downloaded using i-tunes.
Is Quicktime related with i-tunes then.
Do I need to check that even though I'm trying to play these vids using i-tunes.

Can you tell I spent ALL my working life in I.T. Lol.
#5
OK, Quicktime is up to date also.

OP : I have downloaded all these Christmas freebies

lol...is that the legit free ones or just the 'free' ones......

try doing a reset

you can reset it without loseing all your file

its something like , put it on hold and hold the centre button down and hold it pressing the on/off at the same time.if it has reset you get the apple logo on the screen(that how you rest the nano.dont know if its the same way for a full size 1)

google how to reset an ipod and theres loadsof sites tell you how to do it

and before i get slated for saying reset the ipod please dont.i had the same problem with my itunes and thats what apple told me to do

hmm ... so does it work now?

if it doesnt ... i heard good things about VLC - it's free and they say, plays everything! so open VLC software after you downloaded it, and play the video (if you can locate it (do a search).

These are where they are comming from.
I wont slate you for saying reset the ipod but I'm not using an ipod.
I'm just trying to view them on my PC.
I've checked itunes and quicktime and they are both up to date, although Quicktime moaned that not all file extensions were associated with it, so I let it associate everything and then I rebooted just to be on the safe side, and still not working properly.:-(

this should be automatically set already but one less thing to take out of the equation:

in your itunes > Preferences > Playback
check to see if Play music video and Play movies and TV shows is set to in the itunes window in the drop down menu

lol...just asking..was serious as well! lol....

Reason I'm asking is that some of the 'free' ones are coded using different methods and some codecs in standard software have difficulties reading them unless the specific codec pack is installed.

HAve you tried the files on other video playing software JP? just to rule out a corrupt video file?

I use VLC and its true what they say, it is a good piece of software for playing media files, although I can understand OP for wanting to use iTunes if its the dedicated software program that he uses. Nothing worse that having a bunch of software programs to play different file types of the same class.

Right, sorry for the delay, huge learning curve for me.
I've just connected my ipod and copied across these files and they play fine on the ipod.
Went to download VLC and it wants to download 5 other apps also so I've held back on that at the moment.
#14
VLC has not given me a problem so far and i've had them since 2006 on the mac.

reckon it's the codec, or quicktime (which is needed by itunes) is missing something ...
#15
Yep, I think it probably is missing codecs.
I'm gonna try getting rid of quicktime and re-installing.
I'll see what that does first.

VLC is only one exe file JP, what are the other 5 apps?

RIght, Just found this while trawling the net.

Open Quicktime 7
Click on Edit tab and go to preference,
then click on Quicktime Preference.
One that opens click on Advanced tab
You will see a selection for video or direct X.
Click on Safe mode (GDI only)
Then click on Apply, then OK.
Restart Quicktime and play a movie to test.

Seems to have done the trick for me for now.
Will check this out in more detail tomorrow.
I'm off to bed too now.
Thank you all for your help.

I did some more testing before I went to bed and changed it all back to using DirectX but unticked the Enable Direct 3D video acceleration.
This works if playing the video directly using Quick time, but if I play it through i-tunes it is a bit blocky and skippy from time to time.
My PC is not the fastest in the world, but I can watch films using Windows Media Player without any problems.
Will do some more checking in the morning.

good morning all. looks like good progress last night ... look fwd to hear that it will work on itunes proper, which it should.

Had a bad day yesterday. Wasn't doing much on my PC.

Anyway, I've now been to the Nvidia website and updated my graphics card drivers.
Really easy, there is an automated option.
It never used to be like that. I remember it being a right pain to update graphics card drivers.
Changed Quicktime settings back to how they were originally and it is fine when playing using Quicktime directly.
It is still a bit jerky when playing through i-tunes but I doubt if I'll be doing it that way normally.
Thanks for everyones help.
