Can you download something to a memory stick (on another PC) and install from that? If you can, get Malwarebytes and Superantispyware and run them both in safe mode.

basically you have to start up in safe mode to go into those programs to delete it.... brb

if people used decent internet security and firewall in the first place, it would stop things like this happening.
rubbish like free AVG is just a virus scanner, its not up to the task, thats why they do a premium one that you pay for.

but as with every discussion on here, people will post and say the free ones are better than the paid for ones, especially when in conjunction with other free programs.

eset, kaspersky and symantec.
top 3 products of the year 2009 in av-comparatives

avg=nowhere to be seen in any award category.

OP, hope you get sorted and invest a small amount of money into protecting your computer properly now you've seen what can happen with insufficient protection.

and anyone who wants to have a go a norton 2010, find me ONE professional bad review where it says its a resource hog.

Norton corporate edition is by far and away the best AV I have ever used.

what about cookies, spyware, malware, id theft, rootkit etc etc.
to have no internet protection is VERY silly

Installed spybot the other day and nothing found

Which is better, to actively avoid places/files that might infect you
Or
Install a virus checker thats out of date minutes later and surf everywhere thinking your covered when your not

how does one know what to avoid and what not to, especially a novice user.

i recently had a netbook come back to the store, it'd been bought, taken home, not had the trial of mcafee activated, been connected to the customers wifi for less than 2 hrs to do windows updates and it came back riddled.
mcafee couldnt scan, couldnt install anything else on it at all, looked in IE history and temp files-nothing. they hadnt been on any websites.

as some folks say the best offence is a good defence. in computers that would be a firewall, virus scanner that updates often and runs as a real time threat monitor, some ID protection if you bank or buy online and spyware/malware protection.

you may have found nothing with spybot, but try a trip to pcflank and shields up to see how vulnerable your computer is when you're on the net....

I guess you didnt notice the OP is already using AVAST. Agree that it is a million times better than AVG though
