I picked up a Cambridge Audio Azur 840C CD Player from Richer Sounds, Glasgow on Monday after it got transferred from RS Edinburgh. I knew it was an ex-display model, so I never expected it to be perfect. However, when the guy opened up the box, it had a few scratches, was a bit dusty and I must admit, I was disappointed; but then realised I could use this to get it even cheaper as I hadn't paid for it yet. The negotiations lasted about 30 minutes and went something like this...

Me: I'm not paying £600 for that.
RS: Considering its condition, I can do it for £570, but can't go any lower as it's already discounted by £100!
Me: I'm soooooooooooooooooo disappointed; the most I'd pay is £500.

We then discover there's no remote, power cable or user manual in the box. RS get a remote, power cable and print a copy of the user manual.

RS: Ok, I can do it for £545 and give you a £30 CA phono cable for £10.

The remote turns out to be faulty and RS get one that works, although it's rather scruffy looking.

Me: I'll do it for £545 and two-thirds off an £80 CA phono cable.
RS: Can't do it: I can do it for £555 and two-thirds off said £80 cable.
Me: Let's meet in the middle - £550 and two-thirds off £80 cable.
RS: Deal!
Me: [I realise RS forgot to add the £7 P&P from RS Edinburgh and say nothing!]

I pay and as RS box it up, we discover there WAS a (brand new) Remote in the box!

RS/Me: Thanks & goodbye.
Me: I nearly forgot, I'd like £2 to pay my parking fee.
RS: OK, here you go.
Me: [I feel like I've just mugged RS, leave before they change their mind and think I'll probably get banned!]

Like many HUKD members, I'm a bargain hunter at heart and would haggle for just about anything, including sex...just kidding. Basically, I got a £600 CD player and £80 phono cable for £576.26 then saved an extra £7 as they forgot to charge me for sending the 840C from Edinburgh by courier - which is a net saving of £110.74. I've had a few good haggles over the years with Richer Sounds and that's one of them. I love RS!

You think paying £80 for a phono cable is worth it? LOL

Credit to the salesman for swinging the deal to include a massive margin item such as a stupid overpriced cable. I bet he was laughing as much as you when you left.

If the salesman isnt weeping like a girl, you aint done a good haggle.

The sales guy was nearly weeping - when he found the brand new remote after I'd paid for it, he looked absolutely devastated!

So you saved 10% on a scratched, ex-display model

Hardly deal of the century

The net saving is nearly 20% which is a lot better than the 'best discount' of 5% he started with.

If he's happy then I'm happy

Just putting some perspective on it :)

Same thing I was thinking.
For it to be worthy of writing that all out, I was expecting a mammoth discount.

ex display anything isnt a deal imo, never know how many scruffy fingered morons have ragged it about in the shop, id rather pay another 100 for a sparkling new one without any scratches!!!

Haggling is a skill and regardless of what people think of this particular haggle, I won! Through skilled conversation and intelligence, I got RS to lower their 'Final Price' several times till it reached a point where it was either take the deal or walk away. I know they still made a profit, but for anyone who is critical of RS getting a profit from the deal, I invite you to state the bargains you've had that cost over £500 and the retailer made a loss! At the end of the day, I got an outstanding CD Player and cable for 20% less than advertised and I'm more than satisfied.

Unfortunately, there weren't any new ones available otherwise I'd have paid £600 no problem. It was already reduced from £699 to £599 because it was ex-display, so I saved £210 all in all.

Sorry, but you didn't, unless it was £699 for an ex display model.

Personally I love Richer Sounds. TV broke out of guarantee, and the operations director (who posts on HUKD!) sorted things with the local branch to test it...came back dead, but it was an old model, so I got a brand new better spec unit.

Superb customer services, as found in this thread really lets be fair - you got the deal you wanted.

Perhaps more than you know about Double Blind testing and Snake Oil.

I would be pretty certain that's not the case, I mean come on Snake Oil, it's 2010 surely you mean $100 HDMI cables ;)
