well ive got a new pc at work and its got a good spec and everything.

ive installed a few mobile phone unlocking boxes on it and everything was working fine after doing a few restarts. i also installed zonealarm security suite on it and it was all working fine until..

i went to the microsoft website and tried to update xp, it downloaded lots of security updates and the geniuine advantage checker thing. i didnt know if the xp was legit or not so i ran it first and it detected a copied xp. so i changed the key and after all the updates installed i restarted the pc.

when it restarts it asks for user and password (which is normal) i click on ok and all i get is the background, it just stays there until it says windows explorer has encountered an error, please send an error report etc.

so after i click dont send it justs stays there, i can open the task manager and press control alt and delete and log off, restart etc.

ive tried a shutdown and still the same thing.

someone please help as my boss will kill me if he finds out

regards

Uh, did you turn the pc off during the updates?

Have you changed the serial key?, The boss will probably kill you for running illegal software to!!!, lol!

The easiest thing would be to reinstall XP and reinstalling the software, As it sounds like some files are corrupt.

You could mess around booting in Safe mode and sorting out the problems but it'd probably take just as long as a reinstall.

Technically speaking, FAST wouldn't be happy with your boss either if it is not a legit version of XP.

Might be a bit too late now, but have you tried the system restore feature or started the machine using SAFE MODE?

IOM-RF beat me to it :)

One thing i have found very useful of late, is a DOS version of Norton Ghost, NOT the retail windows version. It is VERY small, fits and runs from a floppy disk, or cd and allows you to create an image of your machine. So, load your O/S, drivers applications, software and image the machine whilst stable. Then if the worst does happen you can reload your machine again using Ghost, most you would lose would be any data but you'd all have that backed up anyway, wouldn't you?

lol quite a funny problem..

Anyway, lets get going.

Start your PC and keep tapping F8 til you get into SAFE MODE. You SHOULD be able to get into safe mode as Administrator, then you'll want to go to:

START > CONTROL PANEL > PERFORMENCE & MAINTENANCE > SYSTEM RESTORE

Restore your PC to before you installed anything extra. You shouldn't have changed the serial no. to any programs either, unless you know 100% what you're doing it's risky.

Anyway, write back and let me know whats going on!

I thought the PC was new?

Either way if its for home use or Work use it should be legit.

Before you install the phone software, i'd just add windows, anti-virus, internet access software (unless you're on a work's network of course, just plug the cable in) THEN run the windows update.

There is a way to use xp without having to download the windows genuine advantage tool, it's quite straightforward and you can still receive the updates.

It might be cos you're loading so much at once, without, when prompted allowing the machine to restart, it's getting upset.....

low level format the hard drive and buy a legit copy of windows xp, OEM versions will be the cheapest.
