Due to circumstances in my personal life i have found myself in a situation where I may be getting made redundant from work in a month. I have also due to moving house this week found myself with no cash left at all (im not making this up) So, rather than borrow money from someone i have decided to try and make it to the 13th of march (payday) without spending any cash at all. I already have a bus pass etc for getting to and from work and all my bills and rent has been paidf for this month. Im posting here because I am looking at posting updates on my twitter page (jamieryan84) and thought if people visit this site and i make them aware they can follow me and we can all find out together how easy or hard it is not to have any disposable income for nearly a month. If i find it easy hopefully this will encourage people not to rely on cash so much and save money in these credit crunch times. I plan on updating my twitter with every thing relevant to my experiment, thoughst feelings, missed oppurtunities, other peoples perceptions etc.

Impossible for me. No public transport to my work so I need to drive.

Is it just me or does this sound like it should be on MSE? :?

Sounds good. I've done similar things in the past, on one occasion because I'm slightly too stupid to remember which pocket I left my Switch card in leaving me penniless for a week (btw, a six mile walk home because you can't afford a return bus really deeply sucks), on a couple of others because I've genuinely been skint. I find it actually feels quite nice to walk around penniless, as if there's no reason left to consider buying anything. It's good. I wish you the best of luck.

reminds me of the story I read a while ago about a woman who lived for (I think) a year on money she found in the street. I'll be following you on twitter, with the way twitter is going at the moment, if you update alot your followship should snowball.

Thought about setting up a site with blogger? A daily post at the end of every day talking about your experiences?

And also..
If you add adsense to your site, you could rake in some dollar.

Great idea - set up a 'just giving' page, link to it from blogger, tweet about it alot.

I kind of think the food thing is a cop-out, but I can't see how (unless you went foraging for 'almost' out of date food at the back of your local tescos) you could manage to eat without spending anything.

good luck

direct twitter link would help ;)

I might look into it if interest gets high enough.

I think, if you're going to do it and make it a success (as in media exposure and possibly make some money out of it) you'll have to go hardcore. That means not getting your food from your folks. Google 'freegans' or 'skippers' for some tips.

The food is being provided by my parents. I'm doing it to see about disposable income, by not buying any non essential items, as such i have already bought everything and paid for everything i should need over the next few weeks. Its not about living as cheaply as possible as such, more just not wasting money on stuff like bottles of water, magazines, sweets, crisps, newspapers, video games, taxi's etc on a day to day basis
#20
I have done this before granted i am still staying with my parents but had no expenditure for 2motnths while hardcore saving for my car normally i am a spendaholic for example this week i have spent are 260quid on things that i dont even need really. Not good :/
Good Luck to you

If everything is paid for already this month, you are getting your food and you have a bus pass to get to work, how is this difficult? So you go a month with out getting any extras? Don't see the big deal personally but if this a very different experience for you then good luck

That is the point, proving to people who continually waste money on small frivellous items on a regular basis that this mounts up and actually costs you a lot over the course of a month but that you dont NEED to spend it.

I hope my husband doesn't read this comment and rub my nose in it! LOL

what is it you actually do for a living?

I smell something fishy behind this. Either some 3rd rate bbc3 journo type drumming up support in their latest crusade blah blah or a guy just looking for publicity for some other venture.

I'm out.

I work in a call centre. And for me, and many others, living without spending ANY MORE MONEY would be quite a large undertaking. I don't know anyone who reguarly goes over 20 days without spending a single penny?
#26
i dont get it... youve got a bus pass to get to work and get around with..all your bills are paid and youre getting food of your parents? why would you even need any money then? plenty of people live like that all the time after bills, food and transport is paid

i have already bought everything and paid for everything i should need over the next few weeks

lol it gets more ridiculous, the title should be 'ive paid for everything this month now im not gonna buy anything extra'.... wow big deal. good luck with this 'experiment' lots of low income people live like this full time

... at which point this thread will be pulled on the grounds of making money via self promotion.

Because as someone NOT on a low income and NOT a student and someone who DOES live for buying things i dont need, this is quite a big deal as it will be for people in similar situations. I am not making myself out to be a pioneer or a visionary, its an experiment that people may be interested in

Maybe i am more privilidged than others but i have never been made aware of anyone who has gone 20 days without spending a single penny on anything at all. I have paid my nescessitys, this is an experiment in the requirement of non essentials and how it affects happiness, boredom, social status etc. If i run out of deodorant for example, i wont buy anymore, if i lose my bus pass, ill need to walk to work (8 miles), if my shoes split then i cant buy new ones.

I thought people on this website would be well aware of how much some individuals spend on things they dont NEED but buy it just because they can. I am not saying its a bad thing either.

in before the request for XBL 48hr codes.................lol

My son, who is 20, was made redundant last year in May. Since not attending a dole interview when he was meant to ( brazen stupidity ) he hasn't had ANY money coming in. Fortunately for him, his mother cooks, feeds and clothes him. I can't WAIT till he gets another job!!!
#32
lol

so you have paid for everthing you need for the next month, and then tell us your gonna try and live without money for a month lol wut?
#33
I find it hard to believe that living without spending on non-essentials is felt by anyone to be so unsusual that it is noteworthy, never mind interesting. I and many others have spent swathes of time living just like this.

I think twitter is much like TV, if your not interested in a programme, dont watch it, i ur not interested in what im doing dont follow me. For myself, the 27 people who have pm'd and the 45 people who have started following me on twitter it interests us.
