My own Bruce Lee

Just a little proud mum thread

My eldest son was born 7 weeks prematurely and spent the first 4 weeks of his life in special care. He has had various health problems and operations to correct defects as a result of his early birth and only one medical condition remains which cannot be rectified but doesn't affect him.

We were told he would always be a slow developer both mentally and physically and whilst being very small for his age he has excelled at everything he does.

While in year 1 at school he was being bullied by younger children and lacked any confidence. We decided to enrol him in karate classes to build his self confidence and also to help him defend himself the bullies.

He has taken his red/black belt grading this week and will hopefully take his black belt this time next year and is already training to be an instructor. He has won numerous trophies and medals and the karate has done him the world of good - he is no longer shy and has a real confidence about him.

I have finally managed to get some clips of him uploaded and apologies for the rubbish camera work - not one of my talents

He is well on his way and I just hope he continues. He has been told he could be the best in the country by the time he is 14 if he continues.

I spent some time yesterday at a children's hospice and it just makes me realise how very lucky I am - there but for the grace of god.

Lol, it was to calm my nerves. I had to run over and rescue the bo staff from the stage to stop him standing on it and falling over

I was like him, cept I was a BMX freak. Used to spend dozens of hours every haven/butlins holiday taking on the seemingly huge BMX track that they had at most places - in my yellow BMX outfit with a poorly fitted helmet cos I was so tiny.

It's great when their that age and are all consumed by their hobbies - it's bliss for them IMO.

I'm glad that your proud H :)

I haven't watched the second clip yet but wanted to quickly respond before he goes off to school so he could see this but tell him M said he looks fantastic in the first clip and I know he will only get better and better.

I wasn't much older than him when I was involved in boxing and my instructors kept telling me that I could become a world champion one day but I left it all behind because my friends were jealous that I was the youngest person in the gym to be entered in a national competition and they weren't involved, so they decided to leave.

Eventually, I started getting bored without them and decided not to continue but it's now one of my biggest regrets and my Dad still reminds me how amazing I used to be.

Anyway, the moral of the story is, if you've got a talent, don't throw it away for anyone and make sure it continues to grow.......and I think we all should make sure he keeps developing it. :-D

Please also tell him I'm very proud of him and I know nothing will stop him from reaching his dream.

P.S I think some people were scared of him on the stage......so everyone kept trying to move out of the way before Bruce Lee taught them how to fly. :giggle:

EDIT: Just saw the second clip and it's crazy how he does it so effortlessly...you can tell he's got a great natural talent for it and maybe he can surpass his idol one day.
I doubt his premature birth will effect him in a negative way after seeing that...but it seems he was eager to come out early, so he could achieve his dreams sooner rather than later. :giggle:

I remember doing the same thing when I was younger, exept I done kickboxing I got quite far with it and done it for years but just one day I got bored of it and I really wish I hadnt quit. I could never do it now though I'm far too unfit.

Hope your son sticks to it
#16
Your use of Bruce Lee is very wrong when he was young he wasn't bullied by anyone quite the opposite and also he didn't practice karate , it would be more correct to use a fictional character like "Daniel Larusso"

I am hoping he will stick at it and not be distracted by the things mentioned earlier or get bored but at the end of the day it will be his choice.

Bruce Lee is my son's hero and the reference in this situation may well be factually incorrect but he is 8 years old and I would much rather he has an influential hero such as Bruce Lee than some fictional charater :)

I don't think he will get bored cos you can see how much he enjoys it with every swing and kick.
Considering Bruce Lee is his idol, he won't want to drop it so soon and he'll feel great at being exception at something and I'm sure all the positive comments are helping his passion grow.

Couldn't agree more about Bruce Lee being his idol, a lot of kids these days idolise fictional characters and even though your son and Bruce Lee began their lives differently, they both had the same strong passion and you can clearly see they both have the same essential traits for the Arts. :-D

He's so good, I'm literally buzzing with pride myself right now and wish my future children will be as talented as yours. ;-)

Yes definately, the confidence boost has been amazing for him. He never asks why he is smaller than anyone else now and believes in himself which is the most important thing to me

I think i will look at something like that for my 6year old-he is only 105cm tall-he attends gym-bobs and loves that so it would be a good next stage!
I hope he is as confident at 8 as your guy! he is a joy to watch!
#28
You should send him martial arts or boxing next.

I would definately recommend something like this - its not cheap but worth every penny IMO.

Thanks again everyone I would let him post a thank you himself when he gets home but I suspect he may say something he maybe shouldn't about me  will get round to repping you all instead

Haha, I think you should let the kid say whatever feels right........don't hold him back babes. :giggle:

I'd recommend learning self defence to anyone and the earlier they start, the better.
