My PS3 Dilemma

Ok im taking back my pvr ( freeview recorder) to argos today for a refund - cost me £100
im also returning my so called upscalling dvd player £50 - £150 plus i want a blu ray player

And i thought to myself - why bother rebuying all that separately when the ps3 is liek £250

I dont want the ps3 for games as im sure nothing will intice me but wondering save the hassle of buying another rubbish dvd upscaler and pvr ( buy play tv) and get a ps3 for an extra hundred

I want it as a media hub only but is it worth it just for that

Comments?

Ps3 is good for blu ray outputs fine on 1080p tv aswell as 720p or 1080i

you also can browse internet and if you ever do want to get a game its there.

i think the ps3 is one of the cheapest blu ray players out there, i cant fault it but find upscalers pretty rubbish in comparison.

ps3 is the best blu ray player about ..........

as said, you can use the internet, download content to the HD, upgrade the HD (2.5 laptop drive)
using as a media pc is easy and my brother uses ours to watch dvd's and blu rays.....

probably the best buy we have ever made....... the Pvr for it should be amazing and make the ps3 even better ;-)

yeh i heard its a browser too which is annoying as i spent like £200 on a desktop to access the net in my room :-(

So you think i should buy it -- tbh i dont buy any dvds now as i have hd dvd and im not paying more than £8 for a dvd

To be honest Dan I would say have a look on Ebay I got my PVR for £50 and its RRP was £160

Also for that money how about upscaling home cinema system?

Or go for the PS3...up to you just thinking if your DEFO not gonna use it for its main function just seems a little bit of a waste to me

U know the 360 upscales right?

Up to you, HD dvds wont work on the ps3 i dont think, only BLu Ray.

But you'll find HD Dvds are not being produced due to blu ray pretty much dominating the market, lot of info out there on it.

Yeah you can install and OS on it, linux i know works, not sure on XP or along those lines, but i have connect keyboard and mouse etc with no problems. It is a fantastic buy and the blu rays are fantastic quality.

In my honest opinion its great , all comes down to parting with the cash and do you really want it.

xp won't work on it but linux does well........ yellow dog linux is the best onw to go fir

my ps3 hardly ever gets played with games, mostly used for dvd's........ its a definate good buy....... its upgradable (unlike dvd players and pvr;s)

its not much more than a blu ray player but has 10x the features ...... its also future proof ............

you coukd insert a 1TB hard drive & never worry about space :) (btw sony tell you how to change the HD & its not affected in the warranty :) )

Had my PS3 80GB delivered last Thursday.

Simply stunning. Bought a few cheap games and blu-rays. Watched Superbad which looked and sounded amazing.

One word, stunning.

Two words, buy one.

The Xbox 360 doesn't come close to the PS3 when it comes to media.

It's a no brainer really if you've got the money - I'll admit that the PS3 has been a little lackluster when it comes to gaming but it's nowhere as noisy as my 360.. which is damn loud even when not playing a game though I reduced that a bit when I modded it a while ago.

im pretty sure you were slating the PS3 the other week.

I think you've made your mind up already :).

Also regarding the OS comments it does run Linux but it is relatively gimped so don't be expecting too much from it (definitely forget any thoughts of playing back 720p+). Windows will never run on the PS3 unless it's through virtualization and then it'll be slower than slow so just forget about that.

Nahi wouldnt do that id stuff it up - all i will do is put in a 500gb hard drive - put all my music on there and then order iron man and cloverfield on blu ray :-D

Im still playing my 360 though

I don't know if the current 500GB 2.5" SATA drives will fit in the PS3 (they're slightly larger due to obvious reasons).

If it is too big then your other options would be 320GB (definitely no problem) or 400GB (not sure) though without a doubt 320GB is the sweet spot price wise.

External drives are no problem but individual file size is limited to 4GB.

There is also a mod for the drive tray which will let you use 3.5" drives externally but it will appear to the PS3 as being internally fitted so no file size limit and obviously cheaper drives.

Looking at deals now and the ps3 is way expensive - like £300 with 1 game - i swear the 40gb could be had for like £230

Buy a broken PS3 and get Sony to replace it with a refurbished machine.... going by what I've read on here some people have done just that.

I recall you've been waiting for a price drop since january (when you said it would be sub £200 by feb!).

Are you saying there is another price drop on the way?

anyway, the main points not mentioned so far for buying a PS3 is its reliability, constant firmware upgrades and re-sale value compared to pvrs etc.

How so?
The only difference is the blu ray player.

the 360 processor works on average at 99% where as the ps3 at 6 % mainly because the games have not been designed to get the full potential when run on a ps3, games coming out now should show a big difference.

e.g. 360 game max on dual layer is 9gb of content where as ps3 game max on disc is 50gb

therefore more content, better graphics the list goes on, well at least this is what should happen, should soon see.

Noise, failed HD-DVD format, lacks the ability to copy files onto the HD (cost of said HD...., limited to 20/60 or 120GB drive).

I'm sure there's more but I forget :).

The 360 is just rubbish in this respect, not to mention the lack of WiFi and the ability to watch / listen to your collection on your PSP (should you have one).

I understand the features and i understand why the 360 sucks in those aspects.
But you cant really call than an answer to my question can you.

Oh im hardly a fanboy as im getting a ps3 soon.

If you know the features of both consoles then I don't need to explain to you why the 360 will never be considered a realistic:

If you're going on about Blu-ray vs. DVD9 w / r / t storage, or the list of discs that each console is capable of reading.. I haven't made any comments on either.

My response is media related , i commented on the media aspects of how it will be affected when using types of media, blu ray, dvds etc.

No need to snap on a response which relates to the viewers experience on different consoles.

Ive been on both, there is a clear distinctive difference in that the ps3 is better, and to be honest i loved the 360 especially the online and GUI. However i have had 3 major faults with previous 360 consoles compared to 0 with the ps3 over the last year +.

Simple Fact:

PS3 is moving away from 360s until Microsoft relase a new console that will be able to match the extra functionality and features blu ray discs offer to the next generation consoles.
