My Sky Box wont turn on? Any ideas why?

It hasnt worked all morning and now im getting peeved!

Unplugged it for a minute and tried again as that usually works but not this time!

Really daft advice, I know! But try it,

Turn it off,
take out card,
unplug everything ( remember where everything goes),
Unplug from wall,
Leave for at least 10mins,
put card back in,
Plug everything back in,
plug power back on,
turn on,

Its really basic but it can work,

Do you get any sort of lights on? any power lights?

Just have the red standby light on, wont switch on by pressing button or remote.

Its a Thompson sky plus box

I have the same one, if it doesn't turn on, like 'ifyoudontask' said leave it a good 10mins before plugging it back in, then wait another 2-3mins until you hear it start up. it should work after that.

can happen quite alot unplug for couple of min switch back on then press tv then sky botton amd on button on remote keep doing it may take a few minutes but will come on

Unplug power cord then while holding 'back up' button plug power cord back in. All lights should come on and it will do a reboot. Wait till finished and dont touch it till it's done. This is a good way to update the software inside too.

My box did the same a few weeks ago. I fixed it by pulling the power cord out, plugging it back in, and waiting a few minutes for it to start up fully before trying the On button.

Lol - did try that but they are ok. Plus i cant turn in on by the box either!

Its unplugged right now so fingers crossed when i try again

It's worth doing the reboot I mentioned above from time to time as it downloads all the software updates from Sky.

Ive had this a few times. The first time, it needed to be replaced (the hard drive was faulty.) But the second time, they got me to do something which forced an update. Give'em a ring. If they cant sort it out, they'll send someone out. If its not under warrenty, tell them you are gonna cancel and go to Virgin 'cos you never have to pay for repairs with them.

Well i called and did some reboot thing and it worked fine but an hour later it completely froze so had to call them again!

All seems fine for now - just wonder how much the calls cost me!

Well after more problems and 4 more phone calls they are sending an engineer out on Sunday. Apparently they have had lots of calls today from people with the same box so they are doing a free service call.

3 days with no sky though - arhhhh!
Oh and all recorded programmes gone - boo!

How do you know that the recorded programmes are gone?

Which box do you have? The 2 we have both look the same (Both thomson) but the one downstairs is stuck and the one in my bedroom isnt

Well when ive called them, they talk me through a reboot and it works for a few minutes, hubby looked at recorded progs and they had gone then after a while it freezes again. Its been doing it all afternnon and seems to be a common problem from what they said.

I have a Thompson sky plus box

I hope we havent lost all our programmes. We have left it unplugged for now and are going to try and turn it on again later. Will let you know how we get on

Good luck, i think we only lost ours because we had to do the reboot so yours should be ok. Just hope it works for you otherwise a reboot might be needed xxx

Called sky this morning and managed to get through (after a while on hold). They rebooted the box and I have lost everything on it, but at least its working again.

Annoyed that we have lost everything though, especially because they didnt tell me that before they rebooted it and it was the second thing they tried (after turning it off and on) so I am sure there were other things they could have done first

Ring them. Tell them to come and fix it. If they refuse and it's out of warranty then tell them to just leave it and you'll cancel the contract and go to Virgin.

I am pretty sure the Thompson boxes are entitled to a free upgrade to the newer boxes.

and i fail, 5 years!!!
