Hi everyone,

My sons homework reads as follows -

"Bobby found some loose change underneath the cushions of the sofa.
In total he found £2.22. However, he noticed that he only had four different types of coin. He also noticed that there was an equal amount of each type of coin.
Can you work out which coins Bobby found, and how many of each coin there were?"

I don't think this is possible?

What do my esteemed fellow HUKD'ers think?

Cheers
James

No don't think this is possible as to get to 2.22 you can only use coins below 50p, so 1p, 2p 5p 10p and 20p.
don't see how this can be done.
maybe they mean 2.32 ???
20p x 4 = 80p, 10p x 4 =40p, 2p x 4 = 8p, 1p x 4 = 4p total 2.32 ?

sorry didn't see "He also noticed that there was an equal amount of each type of coin." thought there had to be 4 of each coin as well!

Damn, beaten to it!

Three people getting it in the same minute is a pretty close call.

EDIT: In terms of method, as it ends in a 2 it must contain either 1p or 2p. By trial and error the 1p being included can be eliminated pretty quickly (there are only a couple of possibilities). So then it must contain a 2p, and by simple estimation it must be a six as that results in 12p. The other amounts fall into place after that.

lol i dont blame you i was about to give up after trying 1 and 2 and 3 of each coin then thought why not go higher lol!

2 x 50p + 4 x 20p + 4 x 10p + 2 x 1p = £2.22
4 different coins, equal (or even) ammount of each type of coin, i.e no odd numbers. Simples (I think).
Also depends on how you read the question.

I did it the other way around working out 1p and 2p combinations to make something ending in 2. I gave up briefly before deciding to try 6 x 2p, which brought the answer. So quite literally when the penny dropped the penny dropped :-D

This should be

"And that's coming from an ex-teacher, if I'm right? Shows the state of education being taught these days I guess".

This 'sentence' makes no sense whatsoever.
