you can get a decent 42inch 1080p lcd for around the £500 mark

with that sort of budget you will get a nice 42". i would say plasma, as with lcd, you cant view the screen if you at a funny angle.

This isnt a problem with a LCD this big, tends to be around the 20" mark this happens or with really cheap and nasty LCDS.

go view them in a shop

decide what you like

or

if your not using HD content.....
crt's actually STILL produce a better picture and are cheap as hell second hand these days,
go find a 32"?.........

You can actually - it just depends on the tv. Some have a narrower viewing angles than others :)

LCD or Plasma - horses for courses. Plasma have better "blacks" and are better with motion but they are heavy, power hungry, chuck out a lot of heat and reflect easily. LCD the motion can be blurred with the cheaper ones and the blacks are poor.

Basically go to a shop look at both and get which one you prefer.....

Also - now you are getting a flat panel you might want to think about mounting it on a wall, so bear that in mind when looking at them. You will want one that is the "right" size and look for where you are going to mount it.

when ever i have looked in a shop (say tescos)... some look great and others look a bit crap to be honest, i have always thought that they hadn't tuned them in right. I only want it for watching tv on using a normal sky box. I dont have games to play nor do i have a blu ray. But i do want a good quality picture.

Thanks everyone for answering.

PLASMA do get hot and can use up 500w when On!! a LCD will take 180w power

Now the Plasma gives good Standard TV display but the LCD's not great over 32" say.

HIGH DEF now both can do 1080p if u puchase the ones with FULL HD.

My sony 40" is not bad on the Standard telly stuff but im used to having a lcd tv

Issue was for me the heat and power consumption of a PLASMA! is it doesnt bother you go with a PANAsonic 37" + bigger the better !!

i doubt it... the sony U or no U .. amazon has Toshiba 42" for decent prices too! VX range are excellent!

GO instore check them out for your personal view

id say there isnt any difference, they change the model number slighly or put different letters at the end depending on where u buy the tv from.

have a look at pixmania, we got our 50" plasma from here in the new year and was priced ok.

I would only risk pixmania if it was an exceptional deal. Pixmania are based in France. I would check what the warranty cover is before buying from Pixmania and check it is a UK specification model......

I was in this situation a couple of months ago and brought the Panasonic TX-P42X10B which is a brilliant television and well worth the £600 I spent on it. Here is a good review of the tv http://www.avforums.com/reviews/Panasonic-TX-P42X10-Plasma-HDTV-Review.html

Also the tv is only £530 at richer sounds.

the average plasma will use less electricity than the average desktop PC now.
plus its variable, they use more to create a very bright scene and less to create darker ones as the power to light up each pixel is restricted or even switched off to create darker tones.
on an LCD, the backlight, which has a lifespan of around 60,000hrs, is merely shaded to produce darker colours like black.
hence a lot of LCDs now having the gloss coated screens, to produce better black levels.
Plasmas also have a hard wearing plexi glass screen.

However, according to what I hear every day from customers:
plasmas need to be regassed
have their colour boosted after 3 years
they burn
they catch fire
you can't touch the screen
you cant move them
the bottles of gas are expensive.
they leak gas

from my own experience plasma tvs were responsible for September 11th 2001 and give you Space AIDS.
