I started to notice that my main XBOX 360 has started to make a weird noise when I turn it on. Only if I don't have a disc inside. If there is a disc inside it does not do it.

The XBOX 360 works fine, reads the disc ok (very loud though), but because I am installing everything in my HDD I don't really notice or see it as a problem.

Any ideas what it could be? Should I take it back to the shop (as is still under warranty) so I get another one? would they change it just because of that?

The sound is quite loud (a lot louder than the disc reading noise) and it does sound quite bad but only for a bout 1 sec or 2 seconds at most.
I think initially it was happening randomly, but now it happens everytime (if there is no disc inside).

Could this be a sign of a potential future problem?

I have a 2nd XBOX 360 and it does not do that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Get a can of air spray and give the whole thing a good blast to get all the dust out, might help! Certainly has kept ours clean.

OMG really? I wouldn't spray anything near it cos it would be just my luck that it would die on me, have already had to have the bloody thing changed and its not under its warranty anymore. :santa:

We have two xbox's and do it to both and every time they have got quieter and stops them getting so hot. If loads of dust builds up the fan will eventually pack up.

Obviously each to their own but it has definitely kept ours running smoothly

Sounds interesting, its just the air freshner that got me lol.

Ours is barely used, OH got it for his 25th Birthday(28 this year). Just sits there gathering dust, did a good job of grinding the hell out of GTA V tho.

Me neither, I would not want to spray anything in there. I guess I could keep a disc inside and I will not get the noise. But that's not fixing the problem is probably just delaying it.

What annoys me about taking the XBOX 360 back to the shop is that when they swap it at GAME the warranty on the new one if from the day you bought the first one not from the day they swapped the XBOX which to me is so wrong. What if the new one goes wrong in the 5th month and I only have 4 months to go since I bought the original :x :x I can't believe they get away with this :x

PS: By the way this is my second one, they already swap my XBOX at GAME once. That's why I know they do it like this

What noise is it? Can you at least describe it?

BenQ drives 'moo' a couple of times at you (which is just the drive spindle whirring up) when there's no disc in there - I'm wondering if this is what you're hearing?

moo? Not sure if the sound is like a "moo" now I am the one laughing in here :-D

Let's see how can I describe the noise. It sounds like the dvd drive was trying to start even that it does not need to because there is no disc on it. The noise is not like when is reading the disc and is not like a hoover either which you can hear when the disc is spinning, is something else.

I know the sound is just not normal because it did not used to do it before and my other XBOX does not do it.

I will try to record the sound tonight and see if I can upload the sound here somehow so you can hear it. It might be what you are saying, and if it is any idea What does that mean ?

PS: Apologies for being so bad at describing the noise.

You're spraying AIR into it, it won't do any harm. Buy a tin of compressed AIR and spray it in, see if it helps.

It's probably best described as a low hum. You'll hear it twice if it's empty. It's literally just the drive initialising. As I said it's drive dependent and the others (Samsung, Hitachi or Lite-On) don't do this.

Now let's see I think my XBOX is probably doing what you are saying, or at least you are the only one looking at my problem seriously . I would say that rather than a low hum is more like a very loud hum. Maybe you could compare with the sound of a ink printer cartridge moving but louder and only for 1 or 2 second.

I guess it could well be what you are calling as a "moo" but with the cow having some sort of throat infection so it makes it louder.

I have to record the sound that's probably better. What I'll do anyway is not to have a disc inside for the time being in order to check whether the sound is getting worse.

This just show how used to everyone seems to be to XBOX 360 problems, I would have thought that at least somebody would say to me to take it back to the shop by now, but that is not the case so far. :?

I'm taking it very serious, if it wasnt for my stupidity you'd be away spraying air freshner into it.

Fair enough but with some other comments I have to admit that even I've got out of track.

I'll record the noise tonight and I will upload it here. Any idea what can I use to upload a sound?
Hoepfully once you hear the sound you can tell me straight away what the problem is.

BTW I am still reluctant to use the AIR can. So I will leave that as the last option.

If it's the noise I'm thinking of (judging by your comments, it sounds likely) and it's gotten louder, then it could be the drive spindle drying out. This will get noisier and eventually seize. If it's under warranty, I'd think about getting it looked at sooner rather than later.

Spraying compressed air into your 360 will do it no harm whatsoever. The other thing to do is to vacuum it out (yes, I'm being serious).

Unplug the console and get a normal vacuum cleaner with hose attachment. Move to the rear of the box and you'll have the ventilation holes which allow the two fans to extract the air. Cover one half of the vent holes with one hand (approx 1 fan) and place the vacuum hose over the other. You'll not only give the fan a workout, but help exhaust any nasties inside.

Just had a thought......perhaps you and xboxguru could speak on the phone and they could hear your sound over the phone?

That's another option.

But I found this website

http://www.supload.com/free-audio-hosting

Which allows you to upload mp3 up to 25mb, which suits me perfect for this. So as soon as I get home I record the sound and upload that and let you know.

I recorded the sound but I can not upload it anywhere as is a *.amr format :x I can not use that web-site.

Does anybody know how to convert a amr to a mp3 ?

Or XBOXguru if you send me your email by pm I can send you the file so you can hear it.

PS: Managed to convert the file and post it here

http://www.supload.com/listen?s=LIuhX1#

Now that I am listening to it a bit more carefull it does sound like a cow with a hoover :-)

Please let me know what do you think as I said it only happens when I turn the XBOX 360 on with no disc on it.

Just click on the link, I believe you need adobe flash player to listen to it on the browser. But you can also download the file which is an mp3 file. Try Firefox for some reason it did not work in Internet Explorer for me.

The funny thing is I never thought that the noise was like a cow, but yesterday after I recorded and whilst I was uploading it my wife and daugther were saying that it sounded like a cow.

So I guess my XBOX does have what XBOXguru was saying let's just wait for him to hear it.

I think I better take my XBOX back to the shop for a replacement

Just listened to what you uploaded and yep, that's the sound I was expecting to hear.

It's pretty loud tho, supporting my theory that it's the drive spindle starting to 'dry out'. If you have a warranty, I'd use it to replace the unit.

Well at least we can close this now. I will take my XBOX 360 back for a replacement. Thanks again for all your help. Rep added for you and LaoTzu.

Hopefully my new XBOX will not be infected with the COW FLU :-D

Just came back from the doctor, sorry I mean from the GAME shop and my XBOX 360 has been confirmed to suffer from the cow flu pandemic disease and it's been replaced and send for quarantine to the Microsoft swine laboratories:-D

Make sure that if your XBOX 360 shows any sign of this pandemic you keep it away from any other XBOX 360. The virus seems to be very contagious. :p

Thanks again for your helps guys at least the new Arcade has a manufacturer date of December 2008 instead of June 2008, hopefully this one which is my third one will last longer.
