Name of glue / foam to stop creaky stairs?

Morning,

I have noisy stairs. A while ago a mate who is a builder told me about this specialised glue foam which you apply to the joints. Apparently it expands, sticks to the wood then contracts again pulling the joint tighter (and stopping the creaks).

The problem is, he could only remember that it was a german product, nothing helpful like the name or anything.

My google skills have let me down and I can't find anything that looks likely.

Has anyone come across anything like this? Anyone used it?

    the squeaking is caused by the treads moving up against the nails - over time the flexing of the wood causes the nails to rise up a tiny bit. You can bash the nails back in again, or use new nails in addition - but they need to be 'cut' nails that are flat on the sides. I've never heard of a foam or glue, but another temorary fix is to sprinkle talcum powder onto the squeaky area. Talc acts like a dry lubricant and stops the squeaks - works on floorboards too.

    have you tried using a long weight?



    I did look for one of those too, apparently they're stored at the top of skirting board ladders?

    On the bright side I did manage to get a pack of double sided A4 paper for a different job.

    Ta for that, this was the kind of thing I'd turned up. I found a couple of sites talking about its use for creaky stairs, but a coupld of them say its only a temporary fix.

    Hard to be certain, but my mate was definitely of the opinion that this was specific stair stuff and a permenant fix.

    It sounds like you know what you're talking about, so ta for the info. I was hoping for an 'invisible' fix, but it sounds like more nails are the way to go...

    If you need to know about foaming,you need to speak to the MEMBER Guv he specialises in this.

    Use screws instead of nails, much better and will not work loose.
