Name some healthy but filling meals?

I'm looking to get back in shape and have been visiting the gym and trying to cut down on calorific foods at the same time.
However, salads and other food stuffs I have been trying always leave me hungry, so I was wondering what meals could I eat and be substantially fuller??

What would you define as a healthy filling?? I usually have a baked potato with cheese and beans or tuna mayo. Both are quite fattening, any other suggestions for fillings??

Instead of having ordinary cheese, use cottage cheese. (sounds horrid, but actually it's quite nice)
Mix tuna (in brine) with low fat mayo and sweetcorn if you like it.
Quorn is also very low fat and low in calories. You can make chilli with the mince and as long as you don't use fat, it will be low calorie. I am full of good diet advice, pity I can't lose the 10lbs I've been trying to shift for a year!

Never had Quorn, I thought it was more of a vegi thing. Can't go wrong with an Indian but I doubt that's healthy lol.:thumbsup:

Leek and potato soup.

4 large leeks
2 medium potatoes (I leave the skins on for the nutrients)
1 medium onion
10 fl oz/ 275mlof milk
1.5 pints of vegetable stock
butter
salt and pepper.

Finely chop, slice and wash leeks
chop potatoes up into cubes and dice the onion
melt a good lum of butter/marge etc in a large pan
add the veg to the melted butter and stir until thouroughly coated
add salt and pepper if you like (it does bring out the taste)
pop the lid on the pan and sweat (the veg, not you!) over a low heat for 15 minutes
add the stock and milk, stir well and simmer for around 20 minutes, making sure the milk doesn't boil over

Leave to cool and blend in a food processsor.

DONE!

Obviously add as much or as little s&p as you like. Add more veg to thicken or extra stock if you prefer it thinner. It also freezes very well too.

Is there a calorie difference between tuna in brine and tuna in sunflower oil?? I must say I much prefer the sunflower oil option, but that might be my downfall.

Just beans, low fat coleslaw, bolognese sauce, curry, chilli

Have a small (no bigger than fist sized) potato with some filling and a side salad. Should be filling and healthy

1 Green Apple

For women I would suggest lower the kcals slightly. my eating times are more like 11am, 2pm,5pm,8pm,11pm but I just started from 9am to make it easier to look at. Im currently 77kg too. So the heavier weight you are perhaps you will need more kcals, less weight perhaps a little less.

I make potato and leek soup by just boiling up chopped potatoes, leeks and onion in some vegetable stock until cooked and then blending. Cant tell the difference (I dont think so and neither do the people who have tried it) and its healthier (and easier to do).

I suppose everyone is different though, my aunty makes it by frying bacon and onion and then adding leek and potato and stock and boiling. :)

Vegetarians (like me!) eat it as an alternative to meat, but a lot of people trying to lose weight are now using it as well because it is lower in calories than meat. If you are using it in bolognese/curry/cottage pie etc then (I have been told) you cant really tell the difference.

Definitely worth trying anyway

Chicken is also quite low in fat - Turkey is even lower.

I often cook a whole chicken, with lots of veg and the next day, I use the remaining meat to cook up a chicken soup with noodles. Yummy.

Funnily enough a roast is one of englands favourite tradition dinners, and it can also be the healthiest as long as you stay away from the roast potatoes and veg - just have a couple.

I actually make roast potatoes and carrots with Fry light now - much less fat.

Add a yorkshire pudding just one Aunt Bessies to chicken roast, with veg and a couple of roast potatoes isn't going to be too bad.

I had a Chicken Tikka salad the other day, and added some warm mini onion bhajee's to fill me up a bit and to satisfy my taste buds.

Stir fry is very low in fat and can be so quick and nutritious.

Anything with bulky slow release carbohydrates like pasta (with a low KJ tomato and basil sauce).
Protein meals make you feel less hungry, which is why the Atkins diet works but just protein isn't very healthy, so e.g. have tuna wth some pasta for more filling.

Drink water with your meal to bulk it up a bit and that will feel more satisfying.

Spicy Rabbit Stew

Colombian Name: Conejo Guisado con Coco

Serves 4 Hot Game Vegetables Main Course Gluten Wheat Dairy Free Eggless Colombia South America Sth American

Ingredients
3 tbsp Butter
1 tbsp Oil
8 large Rabbit Pieces
1 large Onion, finely chopped
2 Garlic Cloves, chopped
1 Capsicum (Sweet pepper), seeded and chopped
1 Chilli, seeded and chopped
1 large Tomato, chopped
Salt and Black Pepper
480ml/16fl.oz. Fresh Chicken Stock
180ml/6fl.oz. Thick Coconut Milk

Instructions

1. Heat the butter and oil in a frying pan add the rabbit pieces and brown on all sides. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a large saucepan.

2. Reheat the oil and butter remaining in the frying pan, add the onion, garlic, capsicum and chilli and sauté for a few minutes.

3. Add the onion mixture to the rabbit together with the tomato, salt, pepper, stock and coconut milk. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for 1 ½ hours, until the rabbit is tender.

4. Remove the rabbit pieces from the pan with a slotted spoon and place in a serving dish and keep warm.

5. Bring the cooking liquid to the boil and continue to boil rapidly until reduced and thickened, then pour the sauce over the rabbit and serve very hot with rice.

I get it from Bolton market, they will sell a whole skinned rabbit for about £4. Ask them to cut it into pices for you. I imagine any farmers market or old-fashioned buthchers will be able to get rabbit.

Give it a go, it's quite tasty!

Ok, this may sound gross but i like it.. lol

Fry some mushrooms, peppers, and onion in a little olive oil (add a chopped chicken breast if you fancy)
Add a chicken or vegetable stock cube and fry slowly until cooked through.

meanwhile

Boil up some brown pasta, carrots and broc (i do it in same pan)...

When pasta is almost done, chuck a tin of low fat condensed chicken soup into the onions mixture, refill can to about 2/3 with milk and add that too. let it simmer for a couple of minutes and then drain and add your pasta n veg. give it a good stir and voilà!

Me likes!!


Oh, and stir-fry is always a winner. I get those little sachets of sauce for them, a sweet and sour one has about 1.5g of fat in it. Bargain.

can you tell me what brand of vegetable stock you buy. i love leek and potato soup and make it at least one a week in the winter, but can never get the right "stock" taste.
I don't liquidise it i perfer to over cook it so the potato chucks start to disintergate.
i have recently bought a slow cooker and put all the ingredients in together, i find it much easier.

Sorry. Missed this...

Lean Pork Mince, Lean Turkey Mince, Bread Crumbs, Chopped Onion...

Half and Half the mince, chop some onions (small chunks are fine) and put some bread crumbs in a bowl and basically, get your hands dirty...

Mix all together and make the meatballs (suggest a bit smaller than a golf ball).

I usually cook with some type of italian tomato sauce jobby, but to keep it healthy, you can basically try it with anything to make the sauce (chopped tomatoes & juice for example).

Cook in a pan, usually takes around 15-20 mins to cook through :thumbsup:
