Who said it was easy to update software on a sat nav!!!!

Picked up my new shiny Navigo 4.3" V2 on Thursday and after trying it out on way to work on Friday wasn't that impressed with the software, so taking advice from the various forums that it was an easy 5 mnute job to load Tom Tom onto it thought here we go a bit of a no brainer, how wrong can u be!!!

2 days later...... I have a sat nav that is no use to man nor beast.

Anyway here's what I have done

1/. Backed up the files (maps and mobilenavigator) from the sat nav onto my PC, dont know why bu tit took nearly 3 hours to do that (should have been an indication that summat wasnt quite right).

2/. Secondly had a go at following instructions on downloading the Tom Tom 7.910.9185 uk file but then couldnt open it as it has a file extension caled "rar" which I wasnt able to open and then had to download a trial version of winzip to try and open the "rar" file and that wouldnt work so I have decided to give up and though I will just reload the original navigo files which I had backed up.

3/. Copied the original files (mobile navigator and maps) back onto the sdd card and now all I get when i try and access the navigation icon on the sat nav is a "Failed to load map data files" message.

4/. I have even tried deleting the files (maps and mobile navigator) from the sdd card and starting again but it now says I dont have permision to delete the "mobile navigator" files.

I have always been a bit of a numpty with technology and desperately need some help, can anyone offer some "simple" guidance.

regards

AJ

Not sure about getting the navgo files back on etc, but you could try downloading winrar to unpack the tom tom files.
#2
was it working in it's original shipped condition? - did you try using it first to test it was working before "playing" with it?
edit: OK you did try it out, have just re-read your post

"Failed to load map data files" - this may be that you had lost the folder heirarchy set up, and the program can't find where the maps have been placed because the folder name has changed/been moved/doesn't exist

use winrar & unpack everything onto an empty sd card & give it a go
#3
Thanks Longster but I have got to the stage that I am almost losing the will to live with this and I dont want to end up going down another rabbit hole with the winrar.
#4
Use this its free and will unrar rars and about every other compression. HERE

Thanks Gav will give it a go but I so need someone with some techie know how on this. Ref the second link for the forum, I failed miserably here, I'm afraid that the instructions were not simplistic enough for me, doh!!!
#6
Use Winrar to unzip the file :

http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar380.exe

Did u not have a CD with the software in the box ? Take out ALL the packaging and look in the bottom.
#7

sounds stupid this but for clarity when it says "copy files to the sd root directory" does this just mean copy then to the sd card? and if not where do I find the root directory?

The root directory is the first directory on the file structure. eg if you were copying to your hard drive you would copy to C:/

Make sure the files you copy ARE not in another folder. ie only copy the contents and the sub folders.

thanks Guv, i have copied the "maps" and "mobilenavigator" files across to the sd card but when i reboot the sat nav I am now getting a message that says "failed to load map data files"

From memory you have to go into the map menu in tomtom and choose something like 'Guam' or something like that then reboot it. Then power it up and go into the map options and choose the GB maps. Remember I did this 2 years ago.

It's been quite a while since I've done this, so a little rusty. However from memory, the maps you have used, you need to "crack" it first before you can use it. Were there any instructions in the folders of your download? There should be something that tells you to go into the device settings and make a note of the device SN, which you then need to create / overwrite a system file in TomTom.

Have a look and see if you can see this. Normally there are instructions - but not always.

That was on older maps. The newer ones is via the method stated above.

As I said it was along time ago. My navigo 3.5" was £89.99! But that was good compared to the £180 old fat tomtom

Guys, I think we are getting ahead of ourselves here - my current status is that i have re-copied the Navigo maps and mobilenavigator files back on the sd card from the original Navigo disk but still getting the message "failed to load data maps". I must be doing something fundamentally stupid here so if you guys can be patient with me and take it one step at a time please i'd be very grateful. Not helping that the wife is whinging here and doesnt understand how frustrating this is.

Probably an idea to state what exactly you have on the SD card.

ie
navigator.exe
/maps ........ (ie a folder)
/software

etc

(PS I haven't looked at mine - so the above is just a suggestion how to show it!)

I didnt mean list EVERY file in EVERY sub folder! Just list the folder names and full root dir content ie file names.

From what you have said above, it sounds like you have copied the folder to the root. Without checking - I'm sure mobilenavigator.exe should be on the SD memory root. However - please accept my apologies if thats incorrect Been a while!

Yeh, thats the one. Turbo-poop!

told you im thick,

2 folders in the sd card;-

MAPS

Mobile Navigator

Not sure what you mean by full root dir contents, doh!!!

Try :

1) Re-format your SD card.
2) Copy the folders back to the root of the SD card.
2) Turn on and load up the Navigo WITHOUT the SD card, then turn it off once it has loaded.
3) Insert the SD card back into the Navigo.
4) Switch on again.

I seem to remember summit about it creating a SDMMC2 folder which causes it not to find the map data. The above might fix it.......else your easiest option is to install Tomtom V7 ....there are newer versions but TT7 is the easiest to install.

Hmm. Maybe the SD card has a problem.... Anyone know for sure if the Navigo reads NTFS? (Cos if it doesn't, Windows will format to that and wont be readable by the Navigo.)

Right guys still trying to load Tom Tom but instructions are asking me to runme8.cmd and cannot seem to find this file, any idea?

That'll be a batch file you need to run on the PC to create a patch. I assume you've checked the full contents of your download?

For a start use a card reader to transfer data from PC/laptop to SD card and DONT use the orignal SD card that comes with the unit . There cheap enough to buy now , buy a couple of spare 2G ones . Put the original back in the box in case the unit has to go back under warranty. There is different versions of TT [ PDA ,PNA] and lots of other wink ,wink ,nudge, nudge , versions .............if you know what I mean .Make sure you have the right one . I've just put TT7 onto my 4.3"[v1] and on to 2 x 3.5" [v2] Navigos . Very easy to do now and only takes a couple of minutes .Works very good on these little satnavs. I did the reg hack on my 4.3" to run Miomap ,TT & Igo but have left the 3.5" ones alone and just taken Turbodog off. These are cracking little units for the money and play videos and mps very well .
