I use Tversity at the moment to stream media files to my xbox, but this menas i have to keep my laptop switched on, is there anyway i can stream my home media onto my xbox & wireless dab radio (for which i use jamcast) without having to switch my laptop on, i.e can an online secure server be created? or a home server on the3 cheap, i have an external hd, if that helps Thank you in advance.

There's no way of streaming media to your xbox without having your laptop switched on (I'm presuming thats where the media is).

Why don't you just connect the HD directly to the xbox and play the files from that (presume there may be some hi-def stuff?)

There are many ways, e.g. a good NAS would do the job (and much more), just not cheaply

Network Attached Storage e.g. http://www.synology.com/enu/products/index.php, http://www.qnap.com/Products.asp, http://www.netgear.co.uk/home_desktop_storage.php?src=home

Most have many of the features of a full blown server but much lower power consumption and smaller form factor.

Personally I'd recommend Synology, something like the DS210j http://www.synology.com/enu/products/DS210j/index.php should meet your needs. I'd be looking at a dual bay for the RAID redundancy, you don't want to lose all your media if a HDD goes tits up.

EDIT: there's a good NAS section on AVForums and some good info here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/

Slug as a media server info here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas-howto/24241-howtonslu2hackpt6 but they are over 5 years old now so performance wont be great.
