I think Vista upgrade invalidates your XP key?, Could be wrong though.

I assume from your post that you installed WinXP OK but then you can't navigate through windows into your files stored in Vista? I assume that if you put a password on your vista installation, you can't just navigate into your Vista files through winXP. You probably need to buy vista and install it over your last installation. Can't think of anything else that would sort it out I'm afraid.

What on earth possessed you to install someone else's copy of Vista? Surely you knew that you wouldn't be able to activate it?

Do you have a recovery disc with your PC. This is the answer, however you will lose all your files probably.

What you need to do is to go into the bios (hit F2 or Del several times on start up). Then set the dvd drive to have the boot priority. Restart your computer and then it should say press any key to continue, if you dont press a key then it will try and go to vista. Once you do that it will load a couple of files and ask you what you want to do next. Press install XP. Instead of pressing fix XP go back and click on install XP from scratch (you'll know what i mean when you get to the screen) then delete the partition with your Vista install on it. Then select either quick format (deletes the windows folder and keeps the rest of your files or normal format which deletes everything.

you normally have to hold a key down with the recovery disc loading. It will be on the instructions. I think I have to hold ctrl down whilst the disk is loading.

You might want to try getting the start up discs for xp off MS website - it takes 6 floppy discs.
Change your boot sequence in your bios so that the machine is booting off the floppy disc first. This will read the discs and give you the option to delete all partitions and create a new one. Thereby deleting Vista (and everything else).
Make sure you get the correct version of startup discs. Home or professional.

Quick format deletes EVERYTHING on that hard drive, not just the windows folder (as does normal format, quick format is just quicker).
