Hi,

Im thinking of getting a Asus EEE PC but not too sure on which model to go for.

I can buy the 2GB Whte version for £180 http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/183525/asus-eee-pc-179-99-delivered-at-the/

I have found the 4GB version for £220 at ebuyer.com (good price or not)

Im not sure whether or not to go for the new 20GB version (hard to get hold of)

Just wondering if anyone has one of there experience of it or if someone if selling one.

I have about £300 atm but will have more soon.

The main reason i want a Asus EEE PC is its small and lightweight, unless anyone else has any other laptops i mighty be interested in must be small ish and light.

Thanks all comment welcome

it depends what you want it for and how much you would be working on it. personally if you were using it alot i wouldnt recommend the original eee as the 7" screen can be a bit tiring on the eyes over long periods.

you also need to make sure you are able to do everything you want on the linux os, if not then go for a preloaded xp model.

personally i would wait a bit longer for the new atom based 901's to come out as they should provide better battery life (important when you only have a small battery!)

with other laptops you can pay a fortune for ultra lightweight for example sony's TZ series and some similar asus ones. i went for a comprimise and got a dell m1330 but that is still over your budget

theres a couple of links to some info, if you have a search around you might find a bit more. i think the models are the same, 20gb with linux and 12gb with xp. only problem is now they are getting up to the same price as a normal laptop, so you have decide whether you really need it that light or whether you want more power! lol

also forgot to mention there are a lots and lots of these types of laptops coming out, alot are overpriced and ugly. but theres a couple that are pretty good

I can get a new one for about £20 more how old is your one and i thought if you upgrade the memory it voids the warranty.

I got my 4G black a few days ago, and if I known how much I'm using it I'd have definitely have gone for the bigger screen version. The 701 is perfectly usable though, once you get firefox's stupid horizontal scrolling fixed (by default it is backwards and forwards).

I find the keyboard to be just fine for a laptop keyboard. Obviously it's not on par with a desktop keyboard and you can forget about touch typing at full speed but once you get used to it's layout it's usable. The machine itself is also sturdily built.

The only three complaints I have so far are:

1. The screen resolution could be bigger. It is ok for the majority things but the occasional program or webpage doesn't work too well at that resolution. If you could be using it a lot then it may well be worth going for a 900.

2. There's no obvious way to carry it short distances. If you close the lid it goes into standby but if you leave it open then there's no really grippable points so you have to hang on to an edge.

3. Asus haven't made it obvious how to get new programs onto it. As I've only had it a few days then maybe I've missed something (or maybe the single program I tried just doesn't like the eee).

Oh, and

4. There's no trackpoint, only a touchpad. Although none of the other mini-PCs have one either. (come on lenovo, stop messing about with high resolution monitors and give us our thinkpad mini)

well the 1gb ram cost about 20-25 on its own. i got it end of december but its practically unused...and i am pretty pathetic keeping everything i own in mint condition... for example i dont even put my mobile down on hard surfaces...such as a table..

It doesn't void the warranty and asus have confirmed this since some early machines did wrongly get stickers on them that said it did.

ive got a 4gb one with a tiny version of xp on so it doesnt take up too much space, used it once, would consider selling pm me a price.
