Need Help regarding car M.O.T and your rights afterwards

Hi can anyone tell me my rights after having my car m.o.t
my vauxhall astra just reached its first m.o.t so i took it to my local vauxhall dealer.to cut a long story short they failed it on headlamps being too low so i asked to take it away and get it repaired as they wanted £29 my uncle could do this for free but vauxhall said no if i take it away id have to pay for a full retest!
so i paid up and its passed now but someones told me i should complain and demand a refund for the headlamp inlinement as i should have been allowed so many days to do this without getting charged for 2 m.o.t
if this is right who do i complain to? is it vauxhall?
thanks Lisa

i would have thought retest would be free as long as its a minor fault and not major which headlamp isn't

It's half price re test fee, they've pulled one over on you.

Sometimes it's free

Local garage done a re test for free, but then I paid them to do some of the work. I still took it away to do the easy bits.

According to both those links they shouldn't have charged you.

They don't have to give free retests as far as I'm aware.

There are certain things that they can charge you a full retest fee fo if it leaves their garage.
It's been a long time since I done MOT's so can't remember which.

thanks guys going to look now

you've been had - i'd go back and complain at the garage to the Manager. You had the right to fix it on your own and then take it back the next day for a free re-test!

Thanks going to do it tomorrow after reading what you have to say,do i demand my money back for the headlmap inlinement charge?

Usually free or half-price retest providing you let them do the work. It's the same virtually everywhere, Best to have them mot'd by an independent mot station.

Although light adjustment is very minor and would of only took them a couple of minutes to sort out, The garage I have my mot's at adjusted mine for me for nothing,.

The fact is it'd be wasting their time doing minor jobs like this, But they charge an extortionate amount for a simple job anyway. .

Seems their are certain things they can't charge a retest for, Iamp's for example.

My car failed on 2 things, low beam and corroding brake pipe, at the local council MOT testing station. As one of the faults was due to a headlamp fault my retest was free, otherwise I would have had to pay again. By the sounds of things you may have been had.

How much did they charge you for the alignment. It is about one minute work with a philips head screwdriver.

exactly aircanman...charged me £29.00!

Sounds like the usual bullying tactics used by them when women go in always go with a bloke or someone else for support

no you cant do that as you agreed on the work

you would have had to pay £27 for a re-test if your uncle did it anyway

So basically you are entitled to £2

Very good, it pays for people to complain these days. There is no point letting these massive companies get away with poor service!
