wow... youre asking a 1-month course there.
be specific which want you want to know first?

the easiest is downloading from youtube (or any web-embeded videos for that matter). here it is:
there are two ways (that i know :)) of doing it:

- Using mozilla
1. install mozilla firefox
2. install video downloaderhelper from here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
3. restart firefox
4. go to any vid in youtube you will see now three balls (red, blue yellow) rotatong next to your address bar
5. click the black arrow next to them. it will show the downloadable video (in FLV format)

-using freeware. I use any free video converter: http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ to grab youtube videos

is freeware okay/compatible with vista?

torrent is good but i would be cautious in using the technology.
if you use it make sure you install special firewall for torrents e.g. peerguardian or protowall. the problem is, they dont have vista version yet
you can use the beta version but it takes a lot of know-how

how longs a piece of string. you have to try it to see or read the documentation / webpage for the software you are installing. Mozilla add-ons normally work fine with vista.

read the begginers guide above then come back with any questions as all our replies at the moment will be double dutch. its very easy once you have downloaded something via a torrent once. but far easier to try it yourself from a guide than get piecemeal advice from here.

just to clarify
yup. my machine is vista home premium

i mean that any vid converter is fine with vista. i dont meant all freeware.

i will do - thank you so much 4 the link!!! its on fav's now and will have a good look later -

the only other thing is when i go to youtube there is nothing on there saying 'download' - so how can that be done?

(sorry guys:oops:)

Try a youtube grabber, got a good one but its at home at the moment. Its downloads as a .flv file, then seems to work on Real Player, then use a converter to convert to a video file

i use both peerguardian (RC1 Test2) and protowall just to be sure.
they work but needs adjustment when installing.

as mentioned above, firefox and download helper make it so easy (see the two options on this pic)
