good day,

i am currently on british gas standard tariff and pay when i received the bill
i spend approximately £40 electricity monthly & £70 gas quarterly

i am thinking of switching to either 1. scottish power Online Energy Saver 7 or 2. EDF online saver V3 on monthly direct debit

heard lots of people moaning about their direct debit being set too high, just wondering why that will happen? will enerygy provider just simply raise your monthly direct debit without informing you?
thanks

why are you considering switching to those two. They have the poorest deals at the moment I have found.

I assume you did visit the comparison sites or did a nice bloke at your front door sell you them?

the price comparison site brought EDF V3 online saver as 3rd with scottish power and ova cheaper but as we was already with EDF we changed to the online saver

The price the DD is set at should be an agreement between you and your energy suplier. They will always try to get you to pay more than you need to so. 1. You don't fall into debt with them (this means they don't have to spend money chasing you for it) and 2. They want the money in their account earning interest rather than in yours.

However, they have no right to impose an amount to be taken by DD, nor do they have the right to put your payments up without first informing you - and they will normally only do this when you have built up a debit balance and they are trying to get the money back.

If anyone ever takes more than they have agreed with you to take by DD and does not give you advance notie then they are in breach of the Direct Debit scheme rules and you are entitled to a refund of the DD from your bank (although this doesn't mean you dont owe the company the money, just that you get it back and can then sort it out with them)

I have experience with Scottish Power. They set my DD to £100 even though I live alone in a flat and when I phoned to complain, all they said was its going to be reduced in 3 months automatically. Needless to say, of course they didn't reduce it after the 3rd month...had to keep complaining until the 6month when they eventually reduce the DD to £40 (a price I normally pay before Scottish Power). Don't go to Scottish Power.

how they determine the DD payment?

Scottish Power said they will base it on the consumption of others in your area. Its BS talk, don't believe in it.

I pay £45 monthly dd from Npower...not sure its enough to cover my bills as they set it when I moved it. 3 bed modern build flat.
