Need help with my car, clutch problem

Hi everyone,

I have a Ford Fiesta Lx, when I am driving, say going up a hill in second etc, the clutch goes down on its own, like its ready to go into the next gear, but im sure it isnt supposed to do that. My brother says my clutch is 'hydraulic' so he cant adjust the clutch cable. He has topped up the brake and clutch fluid but it hasnt stopped. Any advice?

When you say the brake/clutch fluid has been topped up, I presume you mean filled to the max line, Not just filled the bottle to the top!!?

It sounds like its the clutch slave cylinder.

I think so, I dont know much about cars, but I can pull of normally. And yes filled to the max line.

I mean, When you change gear normally, When the clutch pedal is to the floor (fully depressed) is there any gear crunches or whines when you change?

How far approximately does the pedal move, 1/4 of the way, Less?

As its hydraulic I would be inclined to say its the slave cylinder, Although you'd normally notice other problems, Not really pedal movement.

Probably the most obvious question i've missed where abouts does it bite, Near to the floor?

Sorry Iom, I forgot about this thread! Anywayz, you where right, it was the slave cylinder! It seems that the brake fluid is leaking aswell. :-(

Im going to take it to a ford place, its going to cost at least £35 for the diagnostic, how much do you think it would cost for the repair?

Me personally I buy the bits I need online and just get a mechanic to fit them (As I don't have a proper workshop ramp etc).

If its leaking fluid (As both the brakes and clutch run off the same reservoir) then don't drive the car (unless down to a local garage < 1 mile), As this will affect the brakes, You could slam on the brakes and get no response at all.

Can I have the year please, I'll have a look for the cheapest price.

Thanks Iom, I have been driving the car as normal, and I keep topping up the fluid. Its a T reg (1999?)

Hmm I would advise against driving it, Simply because brake fluid is highly corrosive and under pressure could spray everywhere!

Not only that but under pressure the part leaking could loosen, Split/crack and then you have next to no brakes (Well you could use the gears as engine braking, But slam on the brakes and there would be nothing!!)

I'd get the part fitted at an independent garage though, The ford dealers will charge a fortune.

Is the car a mark 4 or mark 5?

Its a Mark 4 and engine size is 1.25.

Found a genuine ford part on ebay for £40 including P&P : Item number: 130103467401

But it could be the bearing : Item number: 4640983931

When does it go in for the diagnostic?

Thanks, I havnt booked it in yet, just got a quote. The best garage quote I have for parts and labour is £250!

Hmm, Well they need to drain all the brake fluid, Remove/replace the part, Then replace all the break fluid, Then bleed the system for any air locks, Its probably a good hour and a half - 2 hours.

Depends what they charge per hour, If its £25 then thats £50, Plus the parts which is another £50, Then the fluid £10 etc.

It shouldn't cost more than £150 I wouldn't have thought......

Is the £250 quote from a Ford garage or an independent garage?, Also try asking your mum/dad to ring up, You might find they might try and rip you off because your young, Very annoying but it happens....

Did my work experience in a garage and tried a couple of times to get an apprenticeship with no joy as yet. Its just something I enjoy, One of my hobbies, Nothing better than fixing stuff and getting my hands dirty. :)

If I had the space/A garage i'd want to have a go at restoring old classics, Mk1/Mark 2 escort or Cortina probably first.

Then perhaps a lovely classic Alfa Romeo spider or a MGB GT! :giggle:
