Well I sold my macbook now and buyer has completed payment via paypal but opted to collect. Should I let him come and collect? Could this be a scam?

Thanks for any help.

normal paypal? not gift?
if gift then no worries, if normal paypal then refund and say cash on collection (check the notes).

There was somebody this week reporting a scam like this - buyer paid paypal, collected the TV and then somehow claimed the money back via paypal - do a bit of research you should be able to find the thread.

In your case I would not accept the paypal and insist on cash on collection.
#3
No don't let them!!!! They could say they haven't recieved the item. Cash on collection only

I would NOT let them pick it up - well known scam. If you do, prepare to lose your Mac book AND your money.

He has just messaged me:

'Good evening Mr. (ele-font), My name is..i and I have just bought your laptop via paypal. I'm actually hoping to pick it up myself and eagerly wonder if I can do this tomorrow (or Monday) either at MK station or at your address as I can come either by train or car?
Looking forward to your reply

Should remove his name ideally

I'd say I wish to send it OR refund your money and pay cash on collection (this is preferred).

Tell them that it is not convenient - and that you will only send via Special Delivery or refund the payment and insist on cash on collection only. If they don't like either it's tough - you need to cover your back.

Lol Mr Woodhall you are to quick for me - i'll take the name out too.

That email sounds dodgy. When do you ever win something on eBay and then introduce yourself. Maybe I'm just rude. I would absolutely not accept PayPal and let him pick it up. I would also check any shiney shiney he gives you isn't counterfeit also.

Nooooo, don't do it. It is a scam because they can then do a paypal dispute and as you have no proof of delivery (a signature fromm the guy at the station won't be enough, it has to be Royal Mail or a courrier like DHL proof of delivery) Paypal will find in favour of the buyer. Say cash on collection only, and check the cash isn't a forgery, I had that problem once.

A guy I know from usenet had this scam pulled on him. The laptop was handed over and then a few days later payment withdrawnby paypal as it was using a stolen card.

Refund and insist on cash. It sounds very much like a Nigerian Prince!

The thread is here:

By opening a Paypal dispute they can get their money back as you'll have no proof of delivery if they've collected it - as everyone has advised either deliver it to them through an insured trackable method or they pay cash on collection.

Have a look here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/666380/paypal-ebay-please-help-ive-been-co this is the person people are talking about who postaed a thread earlier in the week and was scammed this way.

he has 100% '469' positive feedback :w00t:... I hope he is genuine and not trying to pull a fast one. Thank god for HUKD and you guys. thanks

just waiting to see what he says now

If the're that way inclined they will probably just say "ok send it" and then hit you with a chargeback saying it doesn't work or similar.

If I were you I'd refund and insist on cash on collection. Sounds dodgy imo but then I always think the worst of ppl :whistling:

Without wanting to scaremonger there is always the possibility the ebay account is hacked too.

I still wouldn't do it. I remember bidding on a PS3 ages ago, the deal was too good to be true but the guy had over 200 feedback, and that was a scam.

Insist on cash or do a second chance offer, not worth losing such a large amount of money over (and possibly your laptop too).

How did you get on with that?
#24
well he's taking his time to reply. (maybe i'm being impatient).

I have his address (which is paypal verified), is that any good to me? I was thinking of exchanging details through ebay, and calling him. But he would get my details, should I do this?

as already said do not allow collection with a paypal payment, no matter what the story in balamory is

They have a mutual thing where you both get sent each others full details

ill pretty much guarantee once you say cash only there will be a dispute opened in paypal........if there isnt already

obviously cash on collection only unless sending via courier with online tracking

my brother got done this way last year, he sold a brand new mobile for £300 on ebay, buyer paid by paypal then the fella came and collected the phone... a few days later the money was withdrawn because it was a stolen credit card and the ebay account had been hacked and the real ebay account holder didn't know anything about it.
#29
personally I would just cancel transaction and put back up for sale

for too many variables and a virtual certainty that they are going to try and scam you in some way or another

its a massive amount of money to risk

better safe than very very sorry
#30
what i do before i exchange details through ebay is change all my details on my account to N/A N/A, apart from a old mobile number they can ring me on & i can turn off once the deal sorted. Then make the exchange of details, make sure you put all your right details back on your account once you done the request as it again ebay rules not to have them on your account. No matter what don't let them pick up unless they pay by cash, just say you can only send by post when the payment made by paypal as that paypal rules

Uh oh... :whistling: This may be the same situation here. Buyer has not got back yet - just wasting time.
I'll refund the money and send him another message.

How can I get my final fee's back?

have a look and see if the buyer has bought any other high value items in the last couple of days, the scammer who did this to my brother had also "won" other expensive electricals over 2 days. I think if a transaction gets cancelled you get your final fees refunded but not the insertation fees? I'd email ebay x

They wouldn't refund the FVF if they do that as they buyer has paid & it the seller who cancel the sale. Don't send the item & just wait for there reply, you have nothing to lose

I have refunded them their money but not cancelled transaction. Just messaged the options of either paying full amount (inc postage) or cash on collection.
I guess I'll re-list it for now.

Take Dizzee Rascal's advice:
"Demand, collect, cash upfront and direct"

Anyway best of luck reselling/sorting it out.

rep for everyone for the help/advice

edit: 'You've given out too much rep in the last 24 hours. please try again later' .. Oh well, will finish off tomorrow

edit: Just to add, buyer ended up paying for total inc postage. :)

If you go for cash on collection make sure you get them to draw the money out from a ATM infront of you.
