Dont get one.

I got student loans...a few grands worth may I add....took me 7 years to pay them back in total...got confirmation in writing that they were all paid off...and 5 years on I still get an annual statement of information telling me that I owe them money.......

The Student Loans Company havent got a clue how to deal with the mass influx of the applications that they get or how to process and track them all.

They are a complete and unmitigated disaster of a company ..start to finish. :-D

not bothered about the paying it back - bothered about the fact it says i was meant to get my first payment on the 21st - it says approved i got letter to say id get it but then no pennies - logged on to see it says approved but next to all the payments it says blocked - not sure what the heck to do as cant afford to pay a single bill or feed my kids!

Yep, and lesson learned there is that the company cant be relied upon to fulfil what, and when they said they would. Re my statement about them being hopeless.

I certainly wouldnt want to rely on them to pay bills or feed anybody.

If I were you I'd start to make alternative arrangements to getting the cash to cover those necessary bills until the Student Hopeless Loans Company decide to get their game together.

I got my first payment 6 weeks after I should have got it if I remember correctly.

Get yourself to a bank toot-sweet, open a student account and explain the situation to them, they will act more swiftly in getting you an overdraft to help you out a lot quicker than the Student Loans Co. will. :)

It says Blocked until you have enrolled at the Uni..... I got my grant the day it was due and the loan a week after, no problems for me at all.

i enrolled on the 17th!!!! at least this is some help as to what's going on - would i contact the uni about this or keep trying to actually get through to the student finance people?

started student loan application in may for my daughter, still awaiting confirmation she has one!email has been restricted, local call from 0890 blocked. Not impressed.numerous letters and calls, save your money, just turn up at uni-they are aware of the situation.Daughter has had a great freshers week, uni told her to turn up and not worrry. You wont be the only one, believe me, the press is full of the mess that student loan company is in.
The latest as far as I am aware is that all students are to be given the max non mens tested loan whilst they try and sort things out. Uni want you, so go, and just try to put it at the back of your mind, you wont be the only one.

nope, already tried that - have to have an account to apply for the student finance in the first place so opened this months ago - but because no money has come through the account yet they can't authorise any extension of overdraft - it was £200 and can't be extended or increased until the loans money has come in and it cost £200 for the bus pass for the term so that was all that gone in one transaction a few weeks ago! bank can't help have already tried.

No I got a £500 overdraft on my halifax student account that I opened a week and a half ago before I got my loan.

Maybe its different depending on which bank you go with?

I was with Barclays and opened a Student Account well before I got my loans money, and they authorised a £400 overdraft for me when I opened it. Shortly afterwards when I explained to them about waiting several weeks to get my first loan payment they extended the overdraft to £1000 and at the same time I got a Student Credit card with a £500 limit on it within 2 weeks.

mines barclays - didnt have the credit for a halifax one - it got refused! thats the problem being a mature student - i already have a credit history so is more difficult to get a student account. Barclays was only place i could get one and 200 max on the overdraft until money goes in then i can increase it to £1000! but now at the point where i can't pay any of my bills, couldn't get my kids new uniforms or shoes for the start of term. Not a case of enjoying freshers for me - more a case of how to get by without getting so many bank charges it will eat every penny of the loan as soon as i get it - really really in a pickle! but at least if i know it says blocked as theres a problem with the enrollment then at least ive got a starting point to work from!!

There's an 8 week process time, it's not there fault if people left it late....

didn't leave it late - mine is approved - have sent back everything and it says blocked which someone said is something to do with enrollment!
#13
My application was late I know and expect it to processed late but daughters was in May- still no joy as yet.
#14
think you were lucky-have given up with daughters, just want original documents back, as said earlier, have had her birth cert and council tax bill several times now-got beyond a joke.Soon be time to apply for next year!
#15
Lots of students at daughters uni havent got it-in fact there was an email sent to them to say not to worry as they were aware of the problems and students were to turn up as expected. At a meeting this week they were told just to produce documentation as and when it arrived, so guess that says it all.

Why don't you got out and get a part time job until your loan comes through?

It is their fault actually... I applied before the deadline online, got a call in mid august saying that I havn't filled in the form??? So i had to do a paper form... Still waiting for conformation, and can't get through on the phone to them. :x

I think they have screwed up big time this year.

If you applied on line you should have received a letter with a declaration for you to sign and return to the loans company. You should also have a letter/form with a bar code which you need to have scanned when you enrol - this is supposed to trigger the release of your loan.
#19
I always had to enrol before they 'released' the loan, maybe this is what it's referring to. Once I'd enrolled it would come through a couple of days later.
#20
While your uni will probably tell you to check with the student loan company, they can check to see if your uni has confirmed your enrollment to the SLC. Once that is confirmed students normally have first installment in four working days. Also, check your letter because some uni's (not all) have to scan your letter to confirm enrolment.
Hope that helps.

not able - takes an hour and a half to get there - hour and half to get back and have 2 kids to look after as well as full time uni - not a job i could get that could pay for child care and if i get a job then i cant apply for any grants, would mess my situation up even more if i got a job! have phoned the peopl today though and they say it's something to do with getting my national insurance number checked - the dwp hasn't sent confirmation that i am who i am apparently so they've re requested the confirmation form them and apparently it should be sorted tomorrow when the dwp place is open! but then again ive heard plenty of explanations from this place - one was that my internet service provider changed my application status (like someone seriously expected me to believe that my isp hacked into my student finance account and changed it from pending to approved!

this is exactly what i was referring to - but mine was delayed by the dwp checks not the enrollment

We didn't have ours scanned we just enroled online like a week before we actually went to Uni.

we had to enroll on line then print the form and take it with us on the first day to get scanned before we could get our uni smart card.

thanks for all the help from everyone - it should be dealt with tomorrow xx good luck to anyone else who's having difficulty too - most of the people on my course hadn't got their money through until friday last week (which was a week after the course started) but some still dont have theirs yet either
