Networking problems (continued!)

Hi all,
To continue my previous thread...I'm networking 3 computers + 2 XBox 360s through a Belkin wired router & netgear switch (only 4 port router).
At first all seemed good but the connection keeps dropping out and then almost immediately reconnecting, this is driving me & the kids mad.
I've tried every possible thing I can think of, even reinstalled vista (all running vista) checked every connection, rebooted everything (modem, PCs, router), done every diagnostic check on vista (showing no problems) but still keeps happening.
Anyone out there got any ideas, my last thougt was 'dodgy router' but seems unlikely.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

What were the results of your ping tests, which part of theh connection is actually dropping?

Firstly, are you in a position where you can watch the router and the switch so that you can see if any of the lights reset on one or other device?

Do any of the PC's come up with a "A network cable has been disconnected", or is it just the internet that drops out?

What is your exact setup, and who is your ISP (cable or ADSL)

Another thing.... are any of the machines running P2P software (such as eMule or Bittorrent), as the sheer number of connections these programs open up can overwhelm some of the cheaper routers

I had a similar problem with a number of Linksys routers at work which broadcast in both 802.11 B and G. By telling the router to broadcast in G only and telling the laptops to receive G only there were many fewer disconnects. You might also want to look at changing the channel your wireless router is using as faulty microwave ovens, fluorescent tubes, and mobile phones can create problems in a wireless network.

I'm with Virgin got a belkin cable wired modem, set up is modem to router router to my pc, router to 2other computers and switch from router to 2 xbox 360s.
Nothing happens except connection drops and then resets.

Strange that you have a Belkin modem, I presume you mean you have a Belkin router?

How exactly do you notice the connection has dropped?

Yes sorry meant router, it shows immediately on xbox live as couldn't connect to host and you're kicked off the server..

What model No.s are Belkin and Netgear.

What speed service you using, 2mb, 3mb etc....

Try:

Take the router out of the equation, plug the switch into the modem and try the XBox's, some Belkin Routers have 'issues' with online gaming.

Make sure your router supports the speed you have, some Belkin routers need to be 'told' what settings to use, ie:

None of the routers (Belkin) I've tested in the above post can cope with 10MB on the WAN port. If you have a 10MB connection make sure your router explicitly states that the WAN port (not just the PC ports) can cope with 10/100MB or says something like "fast ethernet", otherwise the router with have a fit now and then.

That's of course if you haven't sorted it out yet.
