Just seen this announced - new Nintendo DS to come out before March next year (confirmed on Nintendo Japan website..............)

Apparently you can play 3D games without any special glasses, and it will have DS backwards compatability.

"Nintendo Co., Ltd.(Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.

"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.

We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S."

I just hope they do a better job than they did with the 'Virtual Boy', which was more like a torture device than a games console

I'm not sure if 3D on a handheld will be as good as on a larger screen. I guess will need to look at it to make any judgements yet.

Wow, that looks pretty clever. Any idea how they do it? Is it using the camera to judge your position, and then adjusting the on-screen image to match? Pretty freaky anyway.

I'm not sold on 3D technology myself yet, it always gives me a headache.........here's hoping they actually have the tech to back this up.

The problem with this is that the illusion works well when you view it through a camera as the camera has one lens, when you view it through your two eyes in real life the illusion usually disappears.

For something to be 3d your eyes need to see different things, so either looking at seperate screens as in head mounted displays or a way to see different images on the same screen like using 3d glasses or screens that send different images out to certain sweet spots.

Taken from Kotaku:
The game in the clip above is called 3D Hidden Picture. It's a DSiWare puzzle game, available in Japan, that uses the DSi's camera to track the movement of the console, and adjust the image accordingly to make it appear "3D".

Cheers - I have watched that before, but had forgotten about it completely. The guy doing the video is a bit of a minor genius I reckon - very smart guy.

Have you tried it out yourself? (I wouldn't know where to start personally!)

He makes it very easy, some of the most proffesional diy gadget videos I've seen.

I've done it before, but as I said, the illusion is destroyed by having two eyes!

He works on Project Natal now I believe.

Enough time to make another flash cartridge.

I like the Virtual Googles - kind of a low tech/hi-tech mash up (and takes me back to having a ViewMaster!)

Just seen some breaking news on what the 3DS might actually look like btw. Not sure if it is an official prototype or not?
