New Earth-like Planet found 20 lightyears away...Does it even matter?!

Scientist have found a planet 20 light years away that is very similar to Earth that could harbour life... But does it even matter?!?!?! It is 20m LIGHTYEARS away! With our current technology it'll take roughly 500,000 years to get there. Then it might be a dead planet. Some will say its further proof that there could be life harbouring planets out there but we all speculated that anyway. So am I wrong for being so nonchalant about this discovery?!

P.S. Im just passing by...

I do wonder how on earth they can guarantee it's like Earth????

Happy to go on a space mission X)

On a side matter. I googled it and it was discovered in 2007 so I dont know why its making the news now...

Thats my point!!! It'll be all speculation as we have no physical proof, so how is it any different to saying they 'guess' there is an earth like planet out there similar to earth BEFORE they discovered it?

stuff like this fascinates me, no idea why. i was reading about tutankhamun last night X)

I think its quite interesting to just sit and think what is actually out there.

With space and time being infinite there and billions of stars and galaxies there has to be quite a few planets out there, that have a sun that is the exact distance away needed, the right gravitational field etc to carry some kind of intelligent life, i.e human form or alien form that can speak some kind of language.

Maybe planets that are in early stages or millions of years advanced, maybe they have the technology to come by one day and say hi :p or to blow us up! haha

was he an alien ? oO

it's 20 light years away iirc

I believe it just based on the Goldilocks theory. Distance from the Sun etc.

they found it by calculating the gravitational pull on it's "sun"

they can see if the atmosphere has water or oxygen by analysing the light reflected by the planet.

No, but he was only about 8 or 9 when he became ruler of egypt :D

Yep. But scientists have speculated for years and have assumed there a thousands of these said planets... But my point is, does it matter there is one that they have discovered as anything said about it would only be speculation... So apart from sparking the imagination it is a bit of non-news imo.

Goldilocks? better send the three little pigs to setup camp, seven dwarfs for mining the minerals, jack & jill to find water samples and Kerry Katona just to make sure its safe.

I understand your point, but lets be real here, technology is moving a lot faster than we realise. Planets said to be the next 'Earth' have been, gone and probably disproved time and again. I guess the more we progress the more realistic the claims become.

Like a reverse of 'the boy who cried wolf'. edit:(I didn't see the above post when I made this last comment lol)

They might send a probe there though.... Um... The data returned could be interesting reading when I'm 800,000 years old...

You never know what is on the horizon, don't give up hope just yet lol

I am still waiting for the appearance of three boobed aliens. Bliss.

I doubt until were capable of getting close to these other galaxies we'll know for sure, They claim from a slightly distorted blob of light that theirs a planet similar to Earth, Gee's the odds are probably in their favour that somewhere in space theirs bound to be similar planets to Earth that consist of similar elements etc..

only thing is we are such a young race that on the horizon will probably be thousands and thousands of years and we wont be able to see any of it. Bah humbug. Heres hoping to some kind of of cryogenic freezing or transportation through time in the next 60 years or so lol

That was my point, its such a vast space that there maybe millions of planets that are just too far away from a sun or too close etc there has to be just one that is at the perfect distance for life as we know it. Maybe even an existence of life very much like our own right now! Or is that parallel universes? lol

You're onto something there Numpty...Maybe they are a SUPER ADVANCED race and are already HERE! They could probably teleport us there and back and we wont even miss the start of Corrie...

Most life forms in outer space are probably microbial, but a handful of them may be advanced enough to actually reach us. Now, from their perspective, we humans are the microbial life and we would simply not be that interesting to them. I think this is one reason aliens don’t come here and say, “Take me to your leader, Earth man.” An extremely advanced civilization visiting humans would almost be like humans going down to an ant hill and telling them: "I bring you computers, I bring you nuclear power, I bring you knowledge…" Most of the time we simply step on them instead.

Lol, May be so, However I doubt it'll ever be possible for us or any alien race to visit them/us over the vastness of space, I believe the odds are in favour of life, perhaps million's of different kinds of differing intelligence.

It's just the odds of life in the closet couple of galaxies would be very, very slim and even then it'd take 100's of year's to get to the next galaxy. I would say it's impossible to travel anywhere near lights speed ever..!!!

They'd have to create some sort of portal.

Aliens would never travel to Earth in peace, Why would they? They'd be far more intelligent, The only thing they'd come here for is Oil...!!!

Now, the debate, is their life on Mars?

What someone said is true considering we don't really know what the Moon is and it's basically right in front of us.

I do wonder why they don't send people there, pretty sure they are hiding something.

I mean come on.. Aliens.. Serious. If there was such a thing they would be here in a shot.

No offence, but if another planet got some hot mammals on it and I could just float over in my Nissan Skyline UFO TDI and beam up a few of them (Cheryl Cole, Megan Fox, Katy Perry) and then take them back home to my little shack on Alpha Centauri... Then yeah, its well worth the fuel.

Unless of course we are to believe aliens are not attracted to humans at all. I can't believe that lol

There is probably an advanced humanoid race on that discovered 'Earth like planet' and whats more they have probably seens US through a f***in big telescope too but then said "It'll probably take us 500,000 years to get over to that Zlog (What they call Earth) like planet ...I can't be a***d, put the kettle on dear..."

What do you mean 20m light-years? Its 20 light-years away. If you meant 20 million, and it would take 500k years to get there, you'd be travelling 40x the speed of light, and einstein would be wet.

Apparently this planet shot a laser beam at something (which some guy tracked and found this planet)
