About Facebook

Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. People use Facebook to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.

Anyone can join Facebook
All that's needed to join Facebook is a valid email address. To connect with coworkers or classmates, use your school or work email address to register. Once you register, join a regional network to connect with the people in your area.

Discover the people around you
Facebook is made up of many networks, each based around a company, region, or school. Join the networks that reflect your real-life communities to learn more about the people who work, live, or study around you.

Do more
Facebook's Platform enables anyone, anywhere, to build complete applications that you can choose to use. The possibilities are endless. Define your experience on Facebook by choosing applications that are useful and relevant to your world.

Keep it private
At Facebook, we believe that people should have control over how they share their information and who can see it. People can only see the profiles of confirmed friends and the people in their networks. You can use our privacy settings at any time to control who can see what on Facebook.

well done to the OP. rep left

I'll agree with the well done & welcome to louiseyd but I'd also like to thank Stora for a no-frills explanation of Facebook....gotta admit to my ignorance of social networking sites....(the guards don't like me mixing with the general public!!!)...& might have just skimmed over the page not understanding.
Thanks to you both & once again welcome to louiseyd.

(Please don't believe EVERYTHING you hear about me....make up you own mind how unhinged I am!!?!?!)

Security/Privacy seems nill to none.......

Facebook may also collect information about you from other sources, such as newspapers, blogs, instant messaging services, and other users of the Facebook service through the operation of the service (e.g., photo tags) in order to provide you with more useful information and a more personalized experience.

Hmmm.......

Its a good idea though and the privacy isn't any worse than google, Myspace, Msn etc to be honest.............

I know someone, who was on it for ages. Went for a job and the interviewer turned his monitor around and asked him if this was he!!! :w00t: and said he did not think my firend was the sort of person they were looking for, he when home and removed all his details.

A word of warning, it could be fun but it could also be very harmful.....:whistling:

I've always wondered why employers/universities didn't do that! Really, it gives them a better idea about the person (even though some of it might not be what the person wants the employer/uni to see!).
I wonder, how did the interviewer get access to their profile- you can only see it if you are a friend?
Poor guy!

I read somewhere on a recruitment advice website that more and more employers are using social websites to check out prospective employees!! How do they get that info as i thought you had to accept a request to be a friend to view details?? I may have to look at my facebook profile to see whether that is private!
