What do people think to this?
Is it far? Teenagers who have decided to start smoking at younger ages can't.

Heard about it the other week at work and made a big hmmmmm, on what taxes are going to go up and how much business will be lost at smaller shops.

Drinking age also being considered at 21, while the rest of Europe matures and teaches their children responsibility, we mimick America with "out of reach" laws like this and continue to have a generation of children brought up with softley softley laws not held accountable for their actions taught that they can do as they please making us look like binge drinking idiots pissing and vomiting over ourselves here and abroad.

Is the new law a good thing? Yes, just a shame it's under these circumstances and the Smoking Ban will reduce smoking in under 25s far more than this law will.

If you tell someone what they can't do, They'll do it anyway....

Alot of smokers tried their first fag in their early teens, Sometimes at 11-12 too...., Its curiosity that does it!!

Im all for it. 18 puts it out of reach of the "older" kids at school who would be able to buy it for the younger ones. I mean its not going to stop it but if the shops do well in inforcing it then it should be good for everyone.

I have to agree, I don't think this will make any difference.

Yeah.. but you could say that for pretty much anything.

I dont know what it was like for other people, but at my school there is a corner shop about 4 mins from the gates so at lunch the kids wander down and buy their fags/get the older kids to buy them, raising it to 18 will hopefully mean that this cant happen anymore.

asda have been doin it for months near me

silly to be honest, drinking age is 18. Yet still get the underage drinkers.... dont say you never done it ha ha ;)

Well if kids want to kill themselves by smoking then thats fine by me.
They cant claim they dont know as is says so in huge letters on the front of the packet.
If kids can afford £3 to waste on fags then they have too much money.

The smoking ban doesn't work, when it's sunny on an evening and you go out for a drink at the pub if you go outside into the beer garden and you don't smoke you get funny looks!

Queuing for a nightclub/bar all the smokers are either at the door smoking or in the queue having a quick 1 before they get in, so your clothes still smell of cig smoke and your inhaling more or just as much anyway as you are surrounded by people smoking where as in a pub or club people would be smoking sporadically throughout you wouldnt get pockets of complete smoke inhalation.

Hopefully in 5/10 years when people have got used to this smoking ban they'll bring in another where you can only smoke in your own home.

For the 18 law it would cut the grey area of the year 11 students who are 16 buying cigs for the younger ones.

As for the drinking law being raised to 21 most reputable places are check 21 nowadays anyway so most people are 18 or above. There will always be the 16 and 17 year old girls going out on a weekend and getting in, thats got more to do with what they get up to with the bouncers that let them in than what the law says!

In weatherpoons and other chains that have been rolling it out it has worked, Scotland over the last year since the ban implimentation has had a significant decrease in heart related illness's.

You are right though, 5-10years, is when the ripple effect will start, more like 20years+ though.

My original point still remains, the UK is extremely immature and frankly pathetic when it comes to attitudes towards alcohol, the average 18-30year old in the UK looks like adolescent asbo teenager compared to the rest of Europe tbh.

Yes - fair enough, if people want to break a law...they will. But there has to to a bench mark. That's like saying the legal age to hold a full driving licence might as well be lowered to 13, as there are plenty of kids who can 'drive'. If you have no starting point for a law to be enforced - we will have total annarchy!

Don't anyone even mention raising the drinking age to 21.

Then what would I do at uni? Study? Bah!
