New penalties for cannabis users!

Cannabis users will face new penalties when the drug is upgraded to class B from January next year, the Home Secretary said.

Jacqui Smith said those caught with cannabis for a second time will be fined £80 and after three strikes will be arrested.

The drug was downgraded to class C in 2004, but fears over the increased use of stronger "skunk" strains among young people prompted a policy review and U-turn.

Miss Smith said she was "extremely concerned" about skunk and its impact on mental health.

"While cannabis has always been illegal, reclassifying it to a Class B drug reinforces our message to everyone that it is harmful and should not be taken," she said.

"Fewer people are taking cannabis, but it is crucial that this trend continues. I am extremely concerned about the use of stronger strains of cannabis, such as skunk, and the harm they can cause to mental health.

"This is the next step towards toughening up our enforcement response - to ensure that repeat offenders know that we are serious about tackling the danger that the drug poses to individuals and, in turn, communities.

"We need to act now to protect future generations."

glad its being moved to class b, family friends have had some massive problems with their son and this drug, it can have some seriously dangerous effects in terms of a persons mental health.

Agreed. Also shown to decrease use of harder drugs if cannabis is legalised and controlled.

Weed all day. legalising it is not a bad idea. my teacher used to smoke weed

pity they don't upgrade alcohol to a class b drug, seen more people with mental health issues thru that stuff and more violence issues as well.

why would i tell my baby that? its not like im going to be telling my kids about me enjoying smoking weed, my mum has never touched drugs and i smoked weed for awhile while i was in college, it was my choice, its not like im injecting myself with heroine and telling my kids about how cool it is, some people smoke around there kids some people drink around there kids, i dont do any of these things so why should i feel bad that i had a laugh in college, theres loads of stories i wont be telling my kids

ok hormones lol im not that bothered :whistling:

I totally agree! It was merely a question after the way you put about it being a laugh. I've stuck by my saying, "each to their own" !

Know of a friend who used to live in Amsterdam- he said football matches had a totally different atmosphere over there to here-there was no aggression, no real importance was put on their team being the winner-it was all very chilled and about supporting your own team (in a sensible kind of way) and enjoying the afternoon but if they didn't win so what-you just congratulated the other team and all walked off together as FRIENDS who'd shared a good afternoon. Speaks volumes i think!!

Stupid! Im sure they have better things to do like crime and alcohol abuse. Yh i smoke it, but only coz i like it, it relaxing me, and i have a good laugh. I dont drink much but if i did i kno i wud be uncontrollable and voilent. i heard police arnt stopping people much for it now. I used to get stopped like 3 times a week for nothing, wasting my time a*******
