here is the info given on BBC website

Most young adults take their freedoms for granted - they can choose their friends, stay out late, learn to drive and decide what they want to do as a career. But for people growing up on the autistic spectrum, life is very different. Stuck in a strange limbo between childhood and adulthood, they are unable to make these choices.

This documentary follows three people with autism at pivotal moments on the rocky road to being accepted as an adult. They are all fighting for independence and responsibility, but being frustrated by the shackles imposed on them by their disability, their families and the preconceived ideas of mainstream society.

23-year-old Oli has high-functioning autism (HFA) and is looking to find work. He is finding it tough as his condition means that he can't communicate or deal with pressure in the same way others can.

Thomas has autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is approaching 16, the legal age of adulthood. As he does so, he is demanding more independence and wants to escape his family. But the freedom he is after is not forthcoming from his parents.

Alex, 24, is looking for love, but when you have the type of autism known as Asperger syndrome, communicating and socialising can seem an impossible task.

Yeh will be watching this at some point, as there are so many different variations of autism. A friend has two young girls with this. Would be interesting to understand how they work.

We in Canterbury Saturday had Pizza Express that evening,Pizza takeaway yesterday, going get a bag of chips later today,is pain no cold drinks in house cos no fridge. We snacking on other stuff bought by the day, also I don't have a microwave, that might come in handy for this short time.

When I move Thurs the kitchen got a fridge freezer but it be another week or so till my new cooker comes,so in all it be a good 2wks till we have a proper cooked meal.

you should get one of those cheap little mini fridges that you can fit about 8 cans in for now just so you can have some cold drinks :)

Ok I couldn't watch it on Sky but watched it on BBC iPlayer other night.

I thought some of the parents were too over protective actually but suppose this kind of thing can't be helped by them.

Genuinely surprised you thought some of the parents were being over protective. Out of curiosity, which ones did you think this of?

The parents of the lad wanting a job again after he left the library, they didn't seem to say too much so can't comment on them. But I wondered why the Mum walked the guy along to the cafe to meet his online date.

Don't know if some of it was for the cameras or what.

As for the lad with the dyed blonde long hair,I thought his Mum didn't treat him very good,on other hand he seemed quite agressive at times but seemed a stroppy teenager.

It was just 1 hr with a bit in so can only comment what I saw, maybe the parents were over protective cos they know their children been taken advantage of so much in past and stuff like that.

I can see why people might think those reactions were a bit much. I'd imagine the mother went along with the lad to his internet date because if this girl wasn't who she said she was, her son might not have had the mental capability to keep himself safe. Same with the stroppy teenager. I know taking that card out of his room seemed like over the top parenting, but it's likely from watching his behaviour that he's got no concept of how his actions affect others and what reactions on his part are over the top or appropriate in situations.

Just from the short experience I've already had with my son, I don't think it's worry about people taking advantage of their kids that makes their parenting seem over the top, I think it's just down to wanting to keep them safe because of the general lack of safety awareness and common sense that seems to come with autism. It is genuinely interesting for me though to hear what other people think about how parents with autistic children react to certain situations and why they think that :)

It's hard not knowing what to expect, isn't it. But as you say, I've found society have made things a lot harder than they need to be at times, which is a shame. Fingers crossed we have it easier than the parents of the teenager in that program !
