Right.. Got my computer working again.

It now displays, beeps etc.
Faulty psu was the reason for the other fault.

But now, i dont understand the concept of master and slave.
Im using an old IDE 120gb hdd, and a CDROM drive.

I thought the understanding was, to put HDD on master? and CDROM on slave? Is this using the same cable?
Or do i use a different cable?

If they are both on master, it doesnt recognise the hdd.

Cheers guys.

If using the same cable they have to be on master/slave, one of each.

If using seperate cables it shouldn't matter.

Don't use the same cable for your hd and optical drive unless you have to:thumbsup:

Where do you plug the other one?
Could my motherboard only have one cable port?
Plus if you use a different cable, which master/slave do you put them on.

Use Cable Select will make your life easier.

Depends on what make/model of motherboard you have?

Like fox says, use seperate cables if you can, the ports will be next to each other on the motherboard so they'll be easy to see if you have two. Should be called ide-0 and ide-1.

If using seperate cables it shouldn't matter whether they're on master or slave.

If using the same cable put the hdd on master and the cd drive on slave. Although I don't think it really matters.

I don't know about cable select so I can't help you on that one.

Leave both the drive and cd on 'cable select', put the drive on the connector closest to the motherboard and the cd on the final connector.

ANOTHER PROBLEM

Right my new comp is finally sorted.
Fixed the faulty psu issue.

I formatted with xp + service pack 3, all was fine.
Loaded fine.
Just it gets to the xp loading screen, does it capre there, then goes to a black screen for a while.. then eventually boots.
Once your in xp it runs quick, but does sort of half freeze also.

Any ideas?

Could it be down to im still using a 120gb IDE hdd?

Disable USB, network card, sound card, parallel ports, serial ports in the bios. If that improves windows, re-enable each item in turn to see what the problem is.

make sure your cdrom is set to slave (assuming hdd is master) or better still put it on its own ide cable
