Sony extended the functionality of both the PS3 and PSP at Germanys Games Convention on Wednesday including a personal video recorder for PS3 and a satellite navigation accessory and messaging service for PSP. In an effort to further lure in customers, Sony will sell a separate device in Europe that allows user to record live television to the PS3 and wirelessly transfer videos to PSP starting in early 2008. The device, called PlayTV, is said to help boost sales of both the PS3 and PSP and was rumored earlier this month. When asked if PlayTV would be coming to North America, a Sony representative said, We have no announcements at this time regarding DVR/PVR capabilities for PS3 in North America.
In addition to PVR functionality, Sony also announced Go Explore, a satellite navigation device, and Go Messenger, a voice, video, and chat service, for PSP. Go Explore will support GPS and retail for a ,100 and ,150 (US$135-$200). Go Messenger will be made possible via a firmware update supporting VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol). Both services will be available starting in Europe in early 2008.

This is all great for PS3 owners, what Im most excited about though is that the tuner will output the free HD channels that are available (ie, BBC HD). No need for the expensive Sky HD options.

Sounds brilliant!

yep thats the best thing also you can record it onto the ps3 and then watch it from your psp somewhere else.
#5
Any idea how much it will cost?
#6
more than the ps3 lol. no, probably like 50 or something like that.

Looks cool

This isn't really news. Sony said years ago it would have PVR functionalities. Still am unimpressed so far

Agree, 2008....

If anyone wants Digital TV on the PS3 thenvia UPnP and a media adapter surely this is available now?

OK, no PVR functionality unless this is an app. written for the PS3 but there are lots of solutions for this so should people really wait till 2008 and pay the £xxx price that Sony will charge?

AFAIK these are only "trialling" in the Lodon area on Freeview.

Any thoughts about overheating? I don't like to leave the PS3 on for more than an hour at a time because of how hot it gets. Helps that i've got a wooden floor and good ventilation too- remember the clogging problems with the first PS2 fan design?

I noticed it got really hot too, but it is safe to leave it on for more than an hour.

Your biggest worry is the drive to be honest. I have read a few cases where it ends up not accepting the disc, my PS2 had similar problems. I had to send it back on 3 occassions to get the drive replaced by Sony at £60 a pop.

Thinking about it, the PS1 had **** drives too because after a year I had to stand mine up on it's side for it to read discs lol

Just keep it well ventilated, and whatever you do don't put it on any fabric/carpets as it will suck the dust up and kill it within a year

I don't have a PS3 yet but I am confused as to this new product. I appreciate the new features etc but I'm not sure how they get the new features, is it a new external add-on of some adapted software or what.

I'd like to get a PS3 eventually (whenever GTA is out) but if I buy a PS3 now how will I get the new features when they are released?

Unlesss you are desperate, isn't it better to wait?

yh i know what it does but i dont understand how its done. do you have to add the eternal device then add a cable to it or is it done via the internet (wifi)?

the playstation has no tuner built into it so will require hardware.

Sony will sell you an addon box you will plug in basically

The XBOX uses a computer as its hardware, so all you need is them both hooked up on a network.
