Hi all I'd appreciate some advice of you all.
At the mo, im currently on virgin 2 mb broadband, but just this costs me £18 a month.

Now I know you all will say go with Be, or O2, but the house i'm in doesn't have a BT line one, only a virgin phone line.

So if I wanted to be with o2 or Be i'd need a bt line, but am I right in thinking they charge a £125 installation fee?

I asked them if there was something they could do, maybe merge my parents phone line with my broadband...they told me that would cost £20 to merge an account (which is a load of tosh) and even then there were no new offers they could make me.

Just moan to virgin that your internet is too slow and too expensive. The worst they can do is actually cut you off.

So, do you live with your parents?

its complicated (uni), but over the summer i will be yep.

if you tell us a bit more of your circumstances we could probably help more?

For example, how long are you going to be in the house for (as bt have a min contract), how long do you have left on your ntl contract, that type of thing.

The broadband connection would be more or less permanent, as im sure my parents would take over paying for it when I leave (i know theyre normally 12 month contracts).
I don't have anything left to serve, been with ntl broadband for around 2 1/2 years.

So at your parents you have a BB connection in your name, and they have the phone in theirs? Is that correct?

and thats what you are currently paying £18 a month for?

bingo!

ok, thats simple.

Get your parents to ring and get a price on 2mb broadband to be added to their account, call retentions though (ie when you go through on 150 use the i want to cancel option). Tell retentions the situation and see what they offer, say if they don't offer it for £4.50 they will cancel the line completely and go back to bt. Also make it very clear that you will be cancelling your bb as you are going to uni for 3 years. That way they either give her a deal or lose a broadband connection completely.
As a guide, a current retentions offer is

Talk unlimited 24 (telephone line rental + free 24/7 calls), talk mobile and talk international
2mb broadband
Free tv

£19.95 a month.

Tell them you won't pay for the accounts to be merged, and theres also a broadband company who offer the bt connection charge back as a credit (so in effect free connection) if you switch to them (thats true, i just can't remember who is offering it), if they try to say you will have to pay £125 to go back to bt.

I pay £10 for 2mb broadband from Virgin. Choose the option of cancelling when you call up as the cancellations dept offer better deals.
#13
Ok i guess i'll tell my parents to ring up and enquire about adding the broadband to their account.
As for going back to bt, since my family has lived at this house it's been ntl, as far as i'm aware before then there simply was no land line.

btw if i call up to cancel my broadband and they offer me nothing, do I have to give my modem back to them before I can get my parents to add broadband to their account, or is all the equipment i recieved mine after my initial 12 month contract?

they will most likely ask for it back as it isn't yours
however they rarely collect them

Hi,

Phoned Virgin & used the old, wife lost job can't afford it anymore etc, and got put on following retention package 20Mb Broadband, Phone with free calls all day for £26.95 a month.

Also, after saying how sorry I would be to lose the V+ box, they let me keep it for nothing as a freeview box (Still records etc) & gave me the "More on demand" Catelogue for an additional £5.

So it's well worth chancing your arm.

you jammy person, I've been exremely busy today so haven't had a chance, but plan to phone retentions tomorrow morning, so here's hoping.
