This is now the second time this has happened to be, the xbox is only a few months old

I put a game in the tray but all i get on the screen is "open tray" i do that close it again but it doesn't read the disc and come up open tray again.

I eventually got it to read it by turing it on and off again and now it appears to be working fine.

Anyone else has this problem?

Sounds like a DVD drive fault.

I had this ages ago on an arcade and the shop I got it from swapped it out after checking it was a legit problem.

Take it back?

As above. But this happens occasionally on the older machines, but it clears itself after ejecting a few times or turning on and off then works fine :)

But you could take it back if you're not happy with it and get a replacement - save your data to a usb and you're flying.

I think it's a problem carried over from the old 360 model, it's even got a section in Wikipedia.

When an Xbox 360 cannot read a CD/DVD or game disc, it may not recognize that it has a disc in its drive. Instead of "Play Game" or "Play DVD", an "Open Tray" option appears. The issue is linked to a dirty laser in the DVD drive, a magnetic problem that prevents the drive from spinning, or insufficient lubrication of the drive motor. However, disconnecting and re-connecting the Xbox 360 sometimes works. Taking out the disc, closing the tray, then re-inserting it can go around this problem, as the opening and closing of the tray tells the Xbox to read the tray for content. Also, putting in a different game/DVD may work. Lately some cases in which the Xbox 360 can not read any more discs reporting this error all the time have appeared. This issue can be removed if the Xbox 360 is opened and the laser is cleaned.

Also, this error can be caused because the laser travels too far on the guide rails and tries to read the center of the disc where there is no information. This can be fixed by opening the console and placing a spacer on the rail to prevent the laser from traveling too far.

Also there have been many accounts of people modifying their Xbox 360 consoles in a number of ways. Sometimes if this message appears it is usually caused by a problem left by the person who has done this to the Xbox or a CD problem. In some cases you can just turn it off and back on or re-insert the disc and try again.

how do you clean it and what did you use?

by a CD lens cleaner, its just a disk with a small brush on it and you pop it in and you follow some instructions and it cleans the laser. Most retailers should have them even somewhere like poundland should only set yuo back a quid or 2 no more.

Buy a cd cleaning kit and keep your disc's clean if it still does it more than twice in 30 days with 2 different games (providing there are no smudge/scratches etc send the 360 back

Sounds like a plain and simple faulty drive, nothing to do with the old 360 models, just a plain simple bad drive, from the millions sold you are always going to get some faulty ones, no console or PC is excluded from this.
(Oh just realized it's "sennasnit" PS3 fanboy trying to find worst case scenario)

I would send it back....

no, read the xbox forums, it's a common fault, old and new models.
heaven forbid that i may have researched something for a fellow HUKDer, it wasn't a dig, i'd never heard of the fault. do try to keep up.

I'm not going to argue about it, it's simply a bad drive and he should get a new machine exchange.

My PS3 slim is noisy and if I look at the worst case scenrio it is a fault carried over from the PS3 Phats, but I look at it I just was unlucky and got a noisy one.
Worst case scenario
