Newcomers Advice and Tips on HotUKDeals.

Richierea Avatar
9y, 10m agoPosted 9 years, 10 months ago
Several recent forum posts by Admin/moderators and users have given useful information on several aspects of the site. Rather than having people search through various threads trying to find the information they require, I decided to post all the useful information I have seen recently I one place.

This should also give newcomers an idea as to what the site is, and how to use it.

Please add any suggestion/corrections that are needed by replying to this thread.

[U What is HotUKDeals?

Exactly what it says, Hot deals for products/services and of course aimed at the UK.
Anybody can post information about what they think is a Hot Deal, as long as you are registered with the site (free to register, and only takes a minute) you can post deals, be it something available online, only available for purchase in store, or both.

The idea is to create a community sharing deals with one another, so we can all grab a bargain :)

[U How is the site laid out?

The main page ( http://www.hotukdeals.co.ukhttp://www.hotukdeals.co.uk ) displays all the latest Hot deals. Only deals that have been voted hot by users, and reach a certain temperature rating (more on this later) will be displayed on the main page.

To see all other deals that have been posted, but not made it hot, click on the Forum link at the top of the screen http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/forum.jpg , then click on Hot Deals sub-forum:
http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/deals.jpg
This is where all the deals are posted, and clicking on a deal will give the posters information on it, allow you to vote the deal hot or cold, and post comments.

The forum has several sub-forums, including Hot Deals (as above), Deal Requests, For Sale Or Trade, Free Free Freebies, Odds Are, Miscellaneous Musings and Random Nonsense, Comments And Suggestions.
You are welcome to post in any of these forums.

[U Posting a new Deal

Clicking on http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/newthread.gif within the Hot Deals or Freebies forum will give you the screen to post your own Hot Deal.

Follow this post by rayman on how to correctly post your deal:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25646http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25646

You can also post a new deal from the main front page by clicking:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/images/hotukdeals_05.gif
at the top right of the screen.

[U Voucher Codes:

Clicking on http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/vouchers.jpg at the top of the main front page will give you a list of all voucher codes that have been submitted. These can vary from a % off the price, x amount of pounds off or free delivery.

Click a voucher under details and this will give you additional information, such as how to use the voucher, expiry date (if known) and a 'use this voucher' link to the merchant:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/images/voucher_usebutton.gif

Vouchers can be submitted in the same way as Deals see above.

[U Filtering the Deals

On the main front page, you also have the option to filter deals. You can filter deals by merchant, category and type. This can be a useful way to find the types of deals you are looking for.
An example filter screen is shown below:
http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/filter.jpg

Clicking 'Filter Deals' will display all deals matching the above criteria.

For more detailed information on searching and using the filters, check Emma's guide below:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43646http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43646

[U Deal Alerts

Clicking http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/alerts.jpg on the main front page gives you the option to set up RSS feeds on deals. This will allow you to receive RSS feeds on the deals you have requested, as these can be filtered by Category, Merchant and Tags.

[U The Temperature Gage (Hot Deals) What is it?

http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/temp.jpg

The temperature gage is used to judge how hot a deal is, and if it should make it to the main front page. Once a deal reaches a certain temperature it is added to the main page of HotUKDeals. Anybody registered can click hot or cold on a particular deal, and this will increase or decrease the gage. There are several factors on how much impact your vote will have, as explained by Admin below:

The voting rep is based on the temperature of deals you have submitted, the time registered, number of posts, and forum rep. The first is by far the largest and the other factors are there to balance it out and give some voting rep to people who spend their time helping others etc in the forum.

So if you want to have a larger impact voting for deals, your best bet is to start posting your own hot deals, and the hotter they are voted, the more impact you will have when voting.

[U Tags What are they for?

Tags are entered against a deal, as single words or multiple words. Tags allow deals to be linked. For example, if a Dell PC is listed, tags entered could be Dell, PC or Computer for example. Clicking on the tag Computer would bring up all other deals with the tag Computer. This is another way to search for the deals you are interested in.
Tags are entered when a deal is originally posted, but anybody can add additional tags to an existing post. On a deal listing, at the end of the tags list, just click add a tag http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/tags.jpg to add your own to that deal.
On the next screen you will see the 'Edit Deal' screen, the image below shows where to add your own tags:

http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/add_tags.jpg
Having added your tags, click 'submit changes'

For a complete guide on Tags, please see the below post by Admin:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40892&highlight=tagshttp://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40892&highlight=tags

[U Expired Button: Reporting an expired deal (as explained by Admin)
One of the most important things you can do as a member is help keep offers and voucher codes up to date by clicking the EXPIRED button when an offer has ended or when a voucher code no longer works:

http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/expired.jpg

When you click the button it counts as a vote and when enough members vote EXPIRED then the deal is marked as expired. EXPIRED will then automatically show in its title and it will drop out of the active deals list. Also, if it is a voucher it will no longer appear in the vouchers list.
So as you can see, particularly with vouchers, this is a very important thing! You can find the button on the bottom right side of the deal, along with the Edit button.

[U Reporting Abusive Forum Posts
If you want to report a thread on HUKD that is offensive or spam, please click the abuse button - http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/report.gif This contacts all available mods online at that time.
If you are in any doubt about a post, click the abuse button and let a Moderator check it out.
Please try and avoid posting a reply having reported it, as this can cause issues if a moderator is removing the post at the time you are writing a reply.

[U Reputation What is it? (the little green bar) Described by duckmagicuk2

http://www.nil.clan-hosts.net/hduk/reputation.jpg

You click on the http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/reputation.gif button underneath somebody's username if you find their post helpful. You are encouraged to spread it around as much as you like. When you click on the button you can leave positive rep (for helpful deals and things which have helped)

You can also leave a comment. Reputation is anonymous, however the recipient of the reputation will be able to see the comment and which post was made.

You can view your reputation points and comments people have left for you >>http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/usercp.php HERE <<, the page can also be accessed by clicking on "User CP" near the top-left of the forum. The most recent 5 comments are available for view, and the points are in the top right of the page.

What the different coloured boxes mean:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif Green lights in your rep mean that you have received positive reputation from someone with a positive reputation score. This will have increased your points.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gif Grey lights are also positive rep, but have been given by someone with no reputation, and therefore does not have the ability to affect your reputation score. This will have had no effect on your points.

http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/reputation/reputation_neg.gif Red box, this was a negative reputation, meaning someone reduced your points. However, we have now removed the power to negative rep from the forum, so you shuoldn't see any more of these :)

More info on reputation in this thread:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22550&highlight=reputationhttp://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22550&highlight=reputation

Are Voucher codes guaranteed to work?
NO! is the simple answer. Most of the times they will, but keep the following in mind:
First, make sure they have not expired! Even then they could be rejected for various reasons, some of which are:
Voucher codes can be issued to individual users (then posted on this site), this means they may not work for everybody.
Some vouchers can only be used once, some can be used again if applied to different credit cards, it can vary.
Sometimes a voucher stops working, then starts again. This is down to the retailer.

Should Deals include postage? (Answered by emmajk42)
In most cases, we encourage people to always include the postage costs, either in the total price shown, or shown in the post somewhere.
The only time where the total price is not shown with postage is where collect-at-store is available.

Why is reputation left for me grey and not green?
This means the reputation was left by a user who themselves have a low reputation, so it shows a grey box and you do not receive any reputation points from them. See 'Reputation - What Is It?' in the previous post for more info.

How can I search using 'Tags'?
If you want to display all products that have a certain tag associated with them, enter the tag into the URL. For example, http://www.hotukdeals.com/?tag=tft will search for all deals with the word 'tft' as a tag. Just enter /?tag= to the end of www.hotukdeals.com
Tip-this is also a useful way to search for items of less than 4 characters, as the search engine only accepts 4 or more characters for a search.

What is Quidco?
Quidco is a cashback site that pays you for shopping via it's site, so you can make savings on everday purchases.
'Quidco is the web's cashback cooperative. Quidco collects referral commissions from online merchants and passes them all on to our members. The Quidco cooperative is a cashback revolution where members keep their full earnings in exchange for giving Quidco £5 out of their earnings once a year.'
Visit http://www.quidco.co.uk for more information.
Or visit the Quidco help thread: http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14501&highlight=quidco

Where did my 'Hot Deal' thread go?
There are several reasons a thread could be removed, in most cases a mod/Admin should message you with the reason (they are busy, so be patient!). Here are some examples:
1) The post was for an item on eBay or Amazon Marketplace, these are not allowed on HotUKDeals (or any other auction/marketplace site where someone could list their item for sale and then list it as a 'Hot Deal' on this site)
2) The item has already been listed by another member. Before posting a deal, do a search to check it's not already posted, and if your post is removed without an explanation, search for the same item as it may have been listed at almost the same time as yours.
3) The deal may be moved to a 'private' forum soon after posting if a mod feels it needs to be checked out. Be patient as it is then likely to be put back for public viewing.
4) If it looks like the original poster is self promoting an item/merchant the post is likely to be removed.
5) If the deal is regarded as 'spam' the deal will be removed.

Why are some deals posted as 'MISPRICE' ?
Sometimes a deal is seen to be 'too good' which means the poster thinks the item has been mispriced on the website, so they will include the word 'misprice' in the title or you will see it mentioned in the comments people make.
Check out millarcat's post for more detailed info on misprices:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=310275&posted=1#post310275

How do I set up RSS fedds ?
For more info on RSS feeds, see below post by edi:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20618&highlight=feeds

Can I post links to eBay items ?
You can't post links directly to eBay items. Posts for 'Deals' can not be eBay items at all (see above FAQ 'Where did my Hot Deal thread go?').
Replies to 'Deal Requests' can be eBay items, but a link to the item must not be posted, just put the item number in your reply.

Why do my posts not show up straight away? I get a message about needing moderating
Some posts are moderated when a new poster arrives here. It depends on what you're including in your post. Hyperlinks for example will need to be approved by a moderator for 'new users'

TIPS

Filtering deals
If you want to display all deals on the main front page, not just ones that have reached 'Hot', then on the filter section, just click 'Filter Deals' without changing any search criteria. This will show all deals on main page so you can view pictures too.

Posting on Forum
Before posting a question on the forum, check if the question has already been answered! Read the whole thread before jumping in with your question, it may take a bit of time but will save you from receiving abuse from other members for not reading first. Remember you can also use the 'search this thread' tool to help.

Selling and Trading Forum

This forum allows you to trade with other members of HUKD. There are some strict guidelines to follow, please read all of the information on here before posting or offering to buy anything:
All information on trading is provided by Admin.

(1)No eBay or external links to an item listed elsewhere. People will find your item on eBay if they're looking, that's how eBay works...honestly.

(2)No businesses or bulk sales. This is for personal trading/selling only. No linking to an external business/eBay store/Amazon store. This applies to other forums too, items are not to be advertised elsewhere.

(3)List an asking price in your listing. Yup this is now a rule. Trust me it's for the better; it encourages offers, sales and discourages low balls. Every item you list should have a legitimate asking price. Obviously you can still haggle over this.

(4)If advertising a ticket sale it should be at cost price and not an inflated price.

(5) No thread spoiling. If you think a price is too high then don't buy the item. Low ball offers should be made by pm and suggestions on a lower price can be pm'd also. HUKD members are pretty savvy and know to check out prices elsewhere (i.e. eBay) before buying.

Guidelines:

The biggest problem with online trading is checking the honesty of the other party. I strongly recommend people use http://www.heatware.com to leave evaluations on trades and sales. Heatware is a third party site so the reputation you build on there can be used on any forum you sell/buy on. If there are enough HUKD members using it I can request to have HUKD added instead of just using "Other".

Outside of this you can use the poster's eBay feedback to establish some kind of trust level. If you do so make sure you contact the user through eBay to make sure the account they state as theirs is indeed theirs.

Use PayPal. PayPal is far from perfect but at least it gives you the chance of recourse if things go pear shaped.

Leaving Feedback on items bought/sold from buyers/sellers: Please read details posted here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?p=276068

The following message will be posted in every thread made in the 'For Sale or Trade' forum. This is to provide vital information to anyone who wishes to trade.

Please be advised, all buyers and sellers should satisfy themselves that either party is genuine by providing the following via PM to each other, as well as to Admin or Moderator:

1]Landline telephone number Make a CALL to check out the area code and number are correct too!
2]Name and address including postcode
3]Valid e-mail address [no disposable addressessuch as @gmail or @yahoo for example].
4]Using PayPal then check out eBay feedback if there is any and make a small payment to and from each other to validate the PayPal e-mail address.
5]If possible, collect and pay for items in person
6]Only buy from Verified PayPal Members.

Do NOT proceed with a deal until you are completely satisfied with all details being correct. It's in your best interest to check out these details yourself.

NOTE: Please post images of the actual items for sale. This helps your sale or trade by showing the condition and also that you have the product in your possession. Thanks!

Feedback System

We have a new feedback area for sales/trades that have happened in the HUKD forum. The idea of this area is for members to leave feedback on another member for a trade they did on the HUKD FS/FT forum.

The system is not perfect of course, just as eBay feedback is not but it gives the opportunity for legitimate traders to build up a trading reputation on the forum.

We recommend using this feedback as another tool to gauge the trustworthiness of a seller/buyer. Recommended use would be to look up a trader and check their feedback, check the threads they have been involved in and check which users have left them feedback. If all their feedback comes from unknown members it may not be reputable feedback.

Please understand that having feedback does not mean you can trust a member 100%, it is a tool to help you make your decision. Please use it wisely and fairly. Any abuse will result in a permanent ban from the site.

Can we add something like this to the rep bit please:

http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif Green lights in your rep mean that you have received positive reputation from someone with a positive reputation score. This will have increased your points.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/reputation/reputation_balance.gif Grey lights are also positive rep, but have been given by someone with no reputation, and therefore does not have the ability to affect your reputation score. This will have had no effect on your points.

If you see a red box, this was a negative reputation, meaning someone reduced your points. However, we have now removed the power to negative rep from the forum, so you shuoldn't see any more of these :)

I guess it's due to the following:

The voting rep is based on the temperature of deals you have submitted, the time registered, number of posts, and forum rep. The first is by far the largest and the other factors are there to balance it out and give some voting rep to people who spend their time helping others etc in the forum.

Hi. HDUK is a great site, and I'm glad to see its popularity has rocketed since I joined, but (and perhaps this is a question for the FAQ) I've often wondered how it's funded as it has no advertising or sponsorship? There has always been heavy promotion of quidco on here (another fantastic site!) are you affiliated with them? I wondered if maybe you got commission if people buy through your direct links. Hope you don't mind me asking, just curious! :)

I think it's funded by PPC from some Merchants.
Although Quidco and HUKD are owned by the same person they are not linked as such. Quidco is mentioned more than any other cashback site because the cashback rates are very good, (when they come through).
You can mention any other cashback site in deals etc.
#35
Flippin eck, took ages to type that.

OK, thanks, it's as I suspected. Seems strange to promote quidco but only make money when people don't, but if it brings in enough to run the site that's great. The site is so popular now that I can imagine it does bring in enough from those who don't bother with quidco. Anyway, it's a great site, and so is quidco so keep up the good work mods and admin!
